Maximum Credit Policy

Summer Sessions courses, while taught in a compressed time period, still require work equivalent to a full-length course offered during the spring or fall semesters.

Summer workloads can be very heavy, therefore, recommended registration is limited to 1.25 weekly credit hours during any single week. A weekly credit hour is equal to course credit divided by course length (in weeks).

To enroll with an overload, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and advisor approval is needed. Credit Overload Approval forms are available at the Office of the Registrar in Signers’ Hall and Summer Sessions in 216 Eielson Building.

Adding, Dropping and Withdrawing from Classes

Once registration is completed, add/drops may be entered online through the first day of class at
http://uaonline.alaska.edu. After the first day of class, add/drop forms are available at the Office of the Registrar and online. Courses may be added through the last day of registration according to the Dates and Deadlines. Due to the compressed nature of Summer Sessions, classes must be attended on the day the course is added.

Courses may be dropped and not appear on a student’s transcript through the 50% tuition refund period indicated on the Dates and Deadlines. A course dropped after the 50% tuition refund period will be treated as a withdrawal, and a W reported on your transcript. This does not affect the GPA. Courses that are 3 weeks or less do not have a 50% tuition refund period and must be dropped by the first day of class so they do not appear on the final transcript.

It is the student’s responsibility to drop any class he or she will not be attending. Failure to completely withdraw may result in a failing grade on the transcript. Students are responsible for tuition and fees for courses that are not dropped. There is no university initiated drop for non-payment.

Instructors may withdraw students from courses if they do not meet the course requirements or have not substantially participated in the course. Dates and Deadlines indicates the last day for faculty and student initiated withdrawal. Any withdrawal after this point is considered late and requires documentation as outlined in the UAF general catalog.

Wait Lists

What wait listing means

When a class is full, it is listed as “closed” and a wait list is created. If you want to be wait listed for a closed class, select “wait list” from the drop down menu on the Registration screen at UAOnline and click Submit Changes. If you are registering in person, the registration clerk can put you on wait lists for any closed classes.

Restrictions on wait listing

You will not remain on or have access to the wait list for a class if:

After you are wait listed

You may complete registration and even pay fees and tuition with a wait listed class. However, you aren’t charged for a wait listed course, and it doesn’t count toward determining your status as a full-time or part-time student.

Your position on the wait list

Use the web to check your status on a wait list. Follow the instructions to list your courses. You will be advised of your status in each course (either enrolled or wait listed). If you no longer want to be wait listed for a class, you can drop from the wait list by following the instructions for dropping a course.

Check your status using the web, in person, or by calling the Registrar’s Office (474-6300). If you are outside the Fairbanks area, the toll-free number is toll free number is (877) 474-6046.

If space becomes available in a class in which you have been wait listed and your name is at the top of the wait list, you will be moved into the class, unless:

It is your responsibility to check your status in wait listed courses through the first day of instruction. If you no longer want to be wait listed for a course, contact the Registrar’s Office immediately so you will not be placed in—and charged tuition and fees for—a course you do not want.

Start attending classes on the first day

Attend the first day of class for any classes for which you have been wait listed. Let the instructor know you are on the wait list and ask if any additional students will be allowed to enroll in the class. If you are given permission to enroll in the class, you must get a signed special permission form from the instructor and take the form to the Registrar’s Office.

Auditing

Students may register as an auditor if there is space available and auditing is permitted in the class. Students pay the standard tuition and fees for the audited course, but the credits are not included in the computation of credit load for determination of full or part-time status. Students do not receive grades or credits for audited courses. Audited courses do not count in the maximum number of credits allowable in any session or time period. Review of course work and lab participation are at the discretion of the instructor. To audit a class, indicate so on the registration form.

A change from credit to audit can be made with permission of the instructor through the deadline for student withdrawals. Changes made prior to the last day to add courses do not require instructor approval.

Credit-No-Credit Option

Undergraduate students may choose a credit-no-credit option to explore areas of interest not necessarily related to their academic major. Under this option, one elective may be taken each semester. Credit is given if a C grade or above is received. If the student receives less than a C grade, the course is not recorded on the transcript. Additional information and necessary forms are available at the Registrar’s Office.

Grades and Transcripts

Grades are only available online at http://uaonline.alaska.edu. Unofficial transcipts may be viewed using the student records menu on UAOnline. Official transcripts can be ordered at www.uaf.edu/reg/transcripts/. For more information contact the Office of the Registrar.

Individual Study

Individual study (–97) is set up as a special course arrangement between a student and instructor. Individual Study Approval forms can be obtained from the Office of the Registrar in Signers’ Hall, on the web at www.uaf.edu/reg/forms/individual.pdf, and from Summer Sessions in 216 Eielson Building. Instructor and department chair signatures are required.

Research and Thesis

Research (498/698) and thesis (699) are created as a special arrangement between the student and the supervising advisor. To register students submit a completed Summer Research (Non-Thesis) and Thesis form and a Summer Sessions Registration Form. If thesis is being added after registering for other summer courses, students complete an Add/Drop Form.

Communication via E-mail

UAF uses e-mail to communicate with students on many important matters. Email is often the only way some information is distributed. The university automatically assigns each student an official UAF e-mail account when a student enrolls. You are responsible for knowing, and when appropriate, acting on the contents of all university communications sent to your official UAF e-mail account. Email address and password information is available at http://weblookup.uaf.edu.

If you want to receive university communications at a different e-mail address, you must forward e-mail from your assigned UAF account to the e-mail address of your choice. You can set your e-mail to forward online at www.alaska.edu/oit/email/.

Directory Information

The university may release certain directory information to the public on a routine basis unless a student requests, in writing, that the university not release it. Forms to request that directory information not be released are available in the Registrar’s Office. No directory information will be released until the last day of late registration. Any request to withhold directory information will continue until a student provides permission, in writing, for the university to release such. After that, information will be released when appropriate. Students withholding directory information will not appear in the published university chancellor’s and dean’s lists.

The following is considered directory information:

Full-time Status Determination

Undergraduate students registered for 12 or more summer semester credits are classified as full-time students. A graduate student who is registered for 9 or more summer semester credits, with 3 or more at the 600-level, is classified as a full-time student. Courses that are audited or taken for credit by examination are not included in the credit load computation.

Student Responsibilities

It is the student’s responsibility to fully withdraw from a course they do not intend to take. Students who do not formally withdraw from a course may receive a failing grade and be responsible for fees and tuition. Instructors may withdraw students who fail to attend the first day of class, regardless of whether fees and tuition have been paid.
