Maximum Credit Policy
Summer Sessions courses, while taught in a compressed time period, still require work equivalent to a full-length course offered during the spring or fall semesters.
Summer workloads can be very heavy, therefore, recommended registration is limited to 1.25 weekly credit hours during any single week. A weekly credit hour is equal to course credit divided by course length (in weeks).
| CR |
Session | Weekly CR |
| 3 | Three-week session | 1.00 |
| 3 | Six-week session | 0.50 |
| 3 | Twelve-week session | 0.25 |
To enroll with an overload, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and advisor approval is needed. Credit Overload Approval forms are available at the Office of the Registrar in Signers’ Hall and Summer Sessions in 216 Eielson Building.
Adding, Dropping and Withdrawing from Classes
Once registration is completed, add/drops may be entered online through the first day of class at http://uaonline.alaska.edu. After the first day of class, add/drop forms are available at the Office of the Registrar and online at http://www.uaf.edu/summer/registration.
Courses may be added through the last day of registration according to the Dates and Deadlines calendar. Due to the compressed nature of Summer Sessions, classes must be attended on the day the course is added.
Courses may be dropped and not appear on a student’s transcript through the 50% tuition refund period indicated on the Dates and Deadlines calendar. A course dropped after the 50% tuition refund period will be treated as a withdrawal, and a W reported on your transcript. This does not affect the GPA. Courses that are 4 weeks or less do not have a 50% tuition refund period and must be dropped by the first day of class so they do not appear on the final transcript.
It is the student’s responsibility to drop any class he or she will not be attending. Failure to completely withdraw may result in a failing grade on the transcript. Students are responsible for tuition and fees for courses that are not dropped. There is no university initiated drop for non-payment.
Instructors may withdraw students from courses if they do not meet the course requirements or have not substantially participated in the course. The Dates and Deadlines calendar indicates the last day for faculty and student initiated withdrawal. Any withdrawal after this point is considered late and requires documentation as outlined in the UAF general catalog.
Wait Lists
What wait listing means
When a class is full, it is listed as “closed” and a wait list is created. If you want to be wait listed for a closed class, select “wait list” from the drop down menu on the Registration screen at UAOnline and click Submit Changes. If you are registering in person, the registration clerk can put you on wait lists for any closed classes.
Restrictions on wait listing
You will not remain on or have access to the wait list for a class if:
- you are already enrolled or wait listed in another section of the same class,
- the wait listed class conflicts with another class in which you are enrolled or wait listed,
- the wait listed class would exceed your maximum allowed credits, or
- you have holds on your account.
After you are wait listed
You may complete registration and even pay fees and tuition with a wait listed class. However, you aren’t charged for a wait listed course, and it doesn’t count toward determining your status as a full-time or part-time student.
Your position on the wait list
Use the web to check your status on a wait list. Follow the instructions to list your courses. You will be advised of your status in each course (either enrolled or wait listed). If you no longer want to be wait listed for a class, you can drop from the wait list by following the instructions for dropping a course.
Check your status using the web, in person, or by calling the Registrar’s Office (474-6300). If you are outside the Fairbanks area, the toll-free number is toll free number is (877) 474-6046.
If space becomes available in a class in which you have been wait listed and your name is at the top of the wait list, you will be moved into the class, unless:
- you have holds on your account,
- the time conflicts with another class,
- you are already enrolled in another section of the class, or
- adding the class would exceed your maximum allowed credits.
It is your responsibility to check your status in wait listed courses through the first day of instruction. If you no longer want to be wait listed for a course, contact the Registrar’s Office immediately so you will not be placed in—and charged tuition and fees for—a course you do not want. Go to http://uaonline.alaska.edu or the Summer Sessions secure online registration site.
Start attending classes on the first day
Attend the first day of class for any classes for which you have been wait listed. Let the instructor know you are on the wait list and ask if any additional students will be allowed to enroll in the class. If you are given permission to enroll in the class, you must get a signed special permission form from the instructor and take the form to the Registrar’s Office.
Auditing
Students may register as an auditor if there is space available and auditing is permitted in the class. Students pay the standard tuition and fees for the audited course, but the credits are not included in the computation of credit load for determination of full or part-time status. Students do not receive grades or credits for audited courses. Audited courses do not count in the maximum number of credits allowable in any session or time period. Review of course work and lab participation are at the discretion of the instructor. To audit a class, indicate so on the registration form.
A change from credit to audit can be made with permission of the instructor through the deadline for student withdrawals. Changes made prior to the last day to add courses do not require instructor approval.
Credit-No-Credit Option
Undergraduate students may choose a credit-no-credit option to explore areas of interest not necessarily related to their academic major. Under this option, one elective may be taken each semester. Credit is given if a C grade or above is received. If the student receives less than a C grade, the course is not recorded on the transcript. Additional information and necessary forms are available at the Registrar’s Office.
Grades and Transcripts
Grades are only available online at http://uaonline.alaska.edu. Unofficial transcipts may be viewed using the student records menu on UAOnline. Official transcripts can be ordered at http://www.uaf.edu/reg/transcripts/. For more information contact the Office of the Registrar.

Summer Registration Research (Non-Thesis) and Thesis form is available online at http://www.uaf.edu/reg/forms/, at the Office of the Registrar in Signers’ Hall, and at Summer Sessions in 216 Eielson Building. Registration and payment with no late fee is available through July 8.
Communication via E-mail
UAF uses e-mail to communicate with students on many important matters. Email is often the only way some information is distributed. The university automatically assigns each student an official UAF e-mail account when a student enrolls. You are responsible for knowing, and when appropriate, acting on the contents of all university communications sent to your official UAF e-mail account.
If you want to receive university communications at a different e-mail address, it is your responsibility to forward e-mail from your assigned UAF account to the e-mail address of your choice. Set your email to forward at http://www.alaska.edu/oit/email/mail_forwarding.xml.
Directory Information
The university may release certain directory information to the publicon a routine basis unless a student requests that the university not release it. The directory information hold may be enabled or disabled online at http://uaonline.alaska.edu (under Change Confidentiality Option) or in person at the Registrar’s Office. The directory information hold or confidentiality flag on your student record has serious ramifications. Your existence as a UA student will not be acknowledged even to you by the university by phone, online, mail, or email while this hold is on your account. A photo ID will be required to discuss your account. Review the specific details of how a Directory Information Hold will affect you at http://www.uaf.edu/reg/forms/directory_info.pdf.
The university does not release directory information until the last day of late registration. Directory information holds will continue until a student disables this option at http://uaonline.alaska.edu (under Change Confidentiality Option) or provides permission in writing for the university to release such. After that information will be released when appropriate. Students enabling a directory information hold will not appear in the published university chancellor’s and dean’s lists.
The following is considered directory information:
- name
- e-mail addresses
- home city, state
- weight and height of students on athletic teams
- dates of attendance at UAF
- program/major field(s) of study
- degrees and certificates received, including dates
- participation in officially recognized university activities
- academic and co-curricular honors, awards, and scholarships, including dates received
Full-time Status Determination
Undergraduate students registered for 12 or more summer semester credits are classified as full-time students. A graduate student who is registered for 9 or more summer semester credits, with 3 or more at the 600-level, is classified as a full-time student. Courses that are audited or taken for credit by examination are not included in the credit load computation.
Distance Delivered Independent Learning
The Center for Distance Education and Independent Learning (CDE) provides an educational alternative to attending college classes face-to-face. Course work is completed on the student’s schedule via print-based correspondence or online web-based presentation.
CDE courses may be taken in either a semester-based or yearlongtime frame. Semester-based courses are included in determining fulltime/part-time student status, eligibility for financial aid, and grade point average. CDE courses can be found at http://distance.uaf.edu/course-list.php.
Registration information, policies regarding enrollment, transfer, withdrawal, and time extensions are also available at the CDE website. Summer semester-based CDE course registration is available through the usual Summer Sessions registration options.
