General Registration Information
Eligibility
UAF Summer Sessions registration is open to anyone at least 18 years old. Formal admission to the university is not necessary unless using financial aid. Application forms for admission to UAF may be obtained from Admissions and Registration Services or online at www.uaf.edu/admissions/apply/. Deadline to apply for summer admission is May 1.
High school students may take courses for which they meet the prerequisites when they have the permission of the instructor. To register, complete the High School Student Enrollment form available at www.uaf.edu/reg/forms/.

Maximum Credit Policy
Summer Sessions courses, while taught in a compressed time period, still require work equivalent to a full-length course offered during the spring or fall semesters.
Summer workloads can be very heavy. Therefore, recommended registration is limited to 1.25 weekly credit hours during any single week. A weekly credit hour is equal to course credit divided by course length (in weeks).
In a six-week session, you can take a maximum of seven credits. In the full session you can take a maximum of 14 credits.
To enroll with an overload (more than 1.25 weekly credit hours), a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and advisor approval are needed. Credit Overload Approval forms are available at
- www.uaf.edu/reg/forms/
- Admissions and Registration Services in Signers’ Hall
- SSLL in 216 Eielson Building.
Adding, Dropping and Withdrawing from Classes
Once registration is completed, add/drops may be entered online through the first day of class at uaonline.alaska.edu. After the first day of class, add/drop forms are available at www.uaf.edu/reg/ and www.uaf.edu/summer/ or in person through Admissions and Registration Services.
Courses may be added through the last day of registration according to the Dates and Deadlines listing on page 3. Due to the compressed nature of Summer Sessions, classes must be attended on the day the course is added. Courses may be dropped and not appear on a student’s transcript through the 50% tuition refund period indicated on the Dates and Deadlines listing on page 3. A course dropped after the 50% tuition refund period will be treated as a withdrawal and a “W“ reported on your transcript. This does not affect GPA. Courses that are less than two weeks in duration do not have a 50% tuition refund period and must be dropped through the first day of class so they do not appear on the final transcript.
If you decide to drop a class after the published deadline for withdrawal (www.uaf.edu/summer/calendars/) you will need to fill out a Late Withdrawal form (www.uaf.edu/reg/forms/). If you are registered for classes and decide to drop all of them after the published deadline you will need to fill out a Total Withdrawal form (www.uaf.edu/reg/forms/). This is true even if you are registered for only one non-credit or credit class.
It is the student’s responsibility to drop any class he or she will not be attending. Failure to completely withdraw may result in a failing grade on the transcript.
Instructors may withdraw students from courses if they do not meet the course requirements or have not substantially participated in the course. The Dates and Deadlines listing on page 3 indicates the last day for faculty and student initiated withdrawal. Any withdrawal after this point is considered late and requires documentation as outlined in the UAF general catalog.
Wait Lists
What wait-listing means
When a class is full, it is listed as “closed” and a wait list is created. To be wait-listed for a closed class, select “wait list” from the drop down menu on the Registration screen at UAOnline and click Submit Changes. If registering in person, the registration clerk can put you on wait lists for any closed classes.
Restrictions on wait listing
Students will not have access to the wait list for a class if:
- the student is already enrolled or wait-listed in another section of the same class,
- the wait-listed class conflicts with another class in which the student is enrolled or wait-listed,
- the wait-listed class would exceed the maximum allowed credits, or
- the student has holds on his/her account.
Position on the wait list
Use UAOnline to check status on a wait list. Follow the instructions to list your courses. Status in each course will be listed as either enrolled or wait-listed. If you no longer want to be wait-listed for a class, you can drop from the wait list by following the instructions for dropping a course. If space becomes available in a class in which you have been wait-listed and your name is at the top of the wait list, you will be moved into the class, unless:
- you have holds on your account,
- the time conflicts with another class,
- you are already enrolled in another section of the class, or
- adding the class would exceed your maximum allowed credits.
It is your responsibility to check your status in wait-listed courses through the first day of instruction. If you no longer want to be wait-listed for a course, drop the course immediately so you will not be placed in—and charged tuition and fees for—a course you do not want. Go to uaonline.alaska.edu or the SSLL secure registration site, www.uaf.edu/summer/.
Start attending classes on the first day
Attend the first day of class for any classes for which you have been wait-listed. Let the instructor know you are on the wait list and ask if any additional students will be allowed to enroll in the class. If you are given permission to enroll in the class, you must get written permission from the instructor, either a special permission form that you submit to Admissions and Registration Services or an email from the instructor sent to registrar@uaf.edu or summer@uaf.edu.
Auditing
Students may register as an auditor if there is space available and auditing is permitted in the class. Students pay the standard tuition and fees for the audited course, but the credits are not included in the computation of credit load for determination of full or part-time status. Students do not receive grades or credits for audited courses. Audited courses do not count in the maximum number of credits allowable in any session or time period. Review of course work and lab participation are at the discretion of the instructor. To audit a class, indicate so on the registration form.
A change from credit to audit can be made with permission of the instructor through the deadline for student withdrawals. Changes made prior to the last day to add courses do not require instructor approval.
Grades and Transcripts
Grades are only available online at uaonline.alaska.edu. Unofficial transcripts may be viewed using the student records menu on UAOnline. Official transcripts can be ordered at www.uaf.edu/reg/transcripts/ or on UAOnline. For more information contact Admissions and Registration Services.

Individual Study
Individual study is set up as a special course arrangement between a student and an instructor. Individual Study Approval forms are available at Admissions and Registration Services in Signers’ Hall, online at www.uaf.edu/reg/forms/ and from the Summer Sessions office in 216 Eielson Building. Instructor and department chair signatures are required. Registration and payment with no late fee are available through July 8, 2011.
Communication via E-mail
UAF uses email to communicate with students on many important matters. Email is often the only way some information is distributed. The university automatically assigns each student an official UAF email account when a student enrolls. You are responsible for knowing, and when appropriate, acting on the contents of all university communications sent to your official UAF email account.
If you wish to receive university communications at a different email address, it is your responsibility to forward email from your assigned UAF account to the email address of your choice. Instructions on how to forward your UAF email account can be found in the FAQ section of Google Apps @ UA (www.alaska.edu/google/).
Directory Information
The university may release certain directory information to the public on a routine basis unless a student requests, in writing, that the university not release it. Please use the Request to Withhold or Release Directory Information form found at www.uaf.edu/reg/forms/ to request that directory information either be withheld or released. Any request to withhold directory information will continue until a student provides permission in writing or at UAOnline for the university to release such. After that, information will be released when appropriate. Names of students who have requested their directory information to be withheld:
- WILL NOT appear in the published university chancellor’s or dean’s list, commencement programs, media publications, directories and other university publications;
- WILL NOT be able to have their attendance and/or degree verified by a third party (i.e. National Student Clearinghouse);
- WILL ONLY be able to discuss their student record with UA staff IN PERSON.
Review the details of how a Directory Information Hold will affect you at www.uaf.edu/reg/form/directory_info.pdf. The university does not release directory information until the last day of late registration. Directory information holds will continue until a student disables this option at uaonline.alaska.edu (under Change Confidentiality Option) or provides permission in writing for the university (deliverable to the Registrar’s office) to release such. After that, information will be released when appropriate. The following is considered directory information:
- Name;
- Electronic mail addresses;
- Hometown: city, state;
- Weight and height of students on athletic teams;
- Dates of attendance at UAF;
- Program/major field(s) of study;
- Degrees and certificates received, including dates;
- Participation in officially recognized university activities;
- Academic and co-curricular honors, awards and scholarships, including dates received.
Full-time Status Determination
Undergraduate students registered for 12 or more summer credits are classified as full-time students. A graduate student who is registered for nine or more summer credits, with three or more at the 600-level, is classified as a full-time student. Courses that are audited or taken for credit by examination are not included in the credit load computation.
Check Online for Updates
Changes, additions and deletions to the information in this printed catalog can be found online at www.uaf.edu/summer/. Every effort is made to keep that website information current. Telephone inquiries about summer are welcomed at 907-474-7021 or toll free 866-404-7021.
Distance Delivered Independent Learning
The Center for Distance Education (CDE) offers an educational alternative to classroom instruction. Online web-based courses as well as traditional print-based correspondence courses provide flexibility to accommodate individual student schedules.
Most CDE courses may be taken in either a semester-based or yearlong time frame and count as residence credit. Summer semester-based courses are subject to the full session summer schedule. Semester-based courses are included in determining full-time/part-time student status, eligibility for financial aid and GPA. Current UA students may register in semester-based courses at UAOnline or at a local UA campus. If you are not a current student, please call 800-277-8060 for help registering
for semester-based courses. If you are interested in a yearlong course, you may enroll at any time through CDE and have one year to complete the course. Enrolling in yearlong courses will not impact any credit load or semester-based GPA, but will be counted in cumulative totals. A current list of courses is available on CDE’s website or in CDE’s Course Bulletin which can be mailed upon request.
