Fairbanks Piano Festival

Business Academy

Middle School, May 27–30
High School, June 2–6

Business Academy provides middle school and high school students an opportunity to learn basic financial management and investing. Students explore concepts of money management, credit management, purchase decision making, how to invest for the future, and the impact of improper financial decisions. Topic presentation will be tailored to each age group.

Shelton Leadership Institute

May 27–June 1

The Shelton Leadership Institute is a one-week residential summer experience designed to develop leadership skills for students finishing grades 9-12. The curriculum focuses on leadership roles and accountability, team building, leadership styles and situations, motivating others, citizen responsibility, integrity as a leader, public speaking, changing behaviors, and goal setting. Application deadline has been extended to April 30, 2008.

Rural Alaska Honors Institute

May 27–July 10

Rural Alaska Honors Institute (RAHI) is a competitive six-week, residential, college prep bridge program for rural and Alaska Native high school juniors and seniors held on the UAF campus. RAHI students may earn up to ten university credits from a wide range of subjects. Application deadline is March 31, 2008.

Fairbanks Suzuki Institute

June 1–6, 2008

The Fairbanks Suzuki Institute is an intensive five-day session for flute, violin, viola, and cello musicians who use the Suzuki method. Students ages 3–18 may participate in chamber music, steel drums, Dalcroze classes, Suzuki repertoire classes, technique, and master classes. Violin teacher training will also be offered. The institute includes daily recitals and a final concert open to the public. Twenty guest clinicians will be in residence to conduct the Suzuki classes.

Summer Music Academy

June 8–21

The UAF Summer Music Academy is an intensive two-week session for students who have completed grades 6–12. Participants will have opportunities to attend master classes, perform in instrumental chamber ensembles, brass and vocal ensembles, jazz combos, large and small vocal ensembles, and world beat/steel drum bands. Participants will also perform in weekday recitals and a final concert. Students in grades 11 and 12, who are at an advanced level of study with their instrument, may apply for the mentoring program. Mentors work with less advanced students in all ensembles and play in faculty ensembles. The Academy faculty is drawn from members of the UAF music faculty, UAF alumni who are professional musicians and educators, and selected guest faculty.

Visual Arts Academy

June 9–20, 2008

The UAF Visual Arts Academy is an intensive two-week visual arts program for students who are in grades 6-12. Participants will have the opportunity to work with professional artists. This program is designed for students who are seriously dedicated to their art. The following courses are offered: ceramics, computer arts, drawing, metalsmithing, native arts, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.

Upward Bound

June 13–July 25

Upward Bound assists eligible high school students by strengthening their academic performance to help these students graduate from high school prepared for enrollment and success in postsecondary education. High school students who participate in Upward Bound must have demonstrated need for program services and come from low-income families where neither parent has earned a college degree.

Many educational services, recreational, and cultural activities are offered including instruction in academic courses usually not offered in students’ local high schools, academic advisement and counseling, tutorial services, career information, assistance in seeking financial aid, and field trips to stimulate students’ interest in postsecondary education.

Spanish for Young Adventurers (Jovenes Aventureros)

Want to take advantage of your youngster’s innate ability to absorb language? UAF Summer Sessions is proud to sponsor a youth Spanish camp designed for youth ages 7 to 10 years old. Held on the UAF Campus for three hours each weekday morning over the course of two weeks, the camp includes games, music, cooking and outdoor activities all in a friendly and patient environment. Engstrom—with an M.A. in Spanish, over 10 years teaching and living in Spanish speaking countries, AND the mother of three young sons—has all the know-how necessary to make this a wonderful learning experience for your youngster. No prior experience with Spanish language is necessary.

Summer CAFE

Youth Culinary Arts Academy
June 16–20

Students ages 12–17 will spend the week at the training kitchen facilities at the Hutchison Career Center. Students will learn to prepare delicious soups, salads, meats, and desserts. Topics covered will include various cooking and serving techniques as well as food handling health and safety skills.

Kids Cooking Camp
June 23–27

Children ages 7–11 will be introduced to the joys of cooking foods of their liking in a healthy and responsible way. Students learn basic kitchen skills for preparing foods plus health and safety skills and how to clean up after the preparation.

Alaska Summer Research Academy

July 14–25

The Alaska Summer Research Academy (ASRA) provides an opportunity for students in grades 8–12 to experience life on the UAF campus and receive hands-on instruction from university faculty, staff, and industry professionals. Students can explore one of fifteen different fields, such as marine biology, biomedicine, earthquakes, forensics, robotics, web media and engineering. There is no homework or testing.

ASRA students can enroll in the full residential program or participate as a commuter (day camp) student. All students receive a college credit on completion. ASRA is offered by the College of Natural Science and Mathematics in cooperation with other units throughout UAF.
