The third annual Alaska Book Festival, presented by University of Alaska Fairbanks Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning, looked to the past, focusing on the 2009 theme, Historically Alaska. Authors from around the state gathered to share ideas and comments about their own works relating to the state’s history; they also gave a nod to the future by offering guidance on the writing process.  Click here to view the photo gallery from this event.

Marion Nestle is the author of three prize-winning books on nutrition including Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health (2002); Safe Food: Bacteria, Biotechnology, and Bioterrorism (2003), and What to Eat (2006). Her most recent book (published in 2008) is Pet Food Politics: the Chihuahua in the Coal Mine. She writes the ‘Food Matters’ column for the San Francisco Chronicle and co-writes a food and nutrition column for The Bark magazine.  Watch her lecture here.

Willie Hensley is a Qikiktagrukmi, an Inupiaq from the shores of Kotzebue Sound. He has served Alaska in a variety of capacities, he is a father and husband and not only one of the "Real People," he is now a "real writer."  Hensley was a special guest lecturer at the 3rd Annual Alaska Book Festival.
