Consequences of Not Paying

If you do not pay, you will NOT be dropped from your courses. You will be responsible for all tuition and fees. The university will not initiate a drop for non-payment.

If you do not pay your financial obligations, the University of Alaska Fairbanks reserves the right to drop you from classes and to withhold transcripts, grades, housing contracts and other services. If the university takes such action, you will still be responsible for your full debt..

The University may place a financial hold on your student account if you fail to meet your financial obligations. The hold will prevent any registration, transcript, or graduation activity.

Past due accounts may be sent to a collection agency. Interest, late fees, and/or collection costs will be added to your account. Past due debt may be reported to a local credit bureau. The University is authorized to garnish the State of Alaska PFDs for payment of past due accounts.

Late Fees

Late payment fees

  • If you miss the scheduled deadline for fee payment, you will be charged a late payment fee of $100.
  • An additional $100 fee will be assessed on all accounts which are not paid by the withdrawal deadline. Students who pay for or drop their courses prior to the published payment deadline will NOT be required to pay the fee.

Late add fee—If you are given permission to add a class after the last day to pay tuition and fees, you will be charged a late fee of $50 which must be paid within five business days. No late fee will be charged when:

  • you add a late start course during the regular registration period for that course
  • you change from one section to a different section of the same course, or
  • you add a course to replace a canceled course in which you were previously enrolled.

If, after you pay your tuition and fees, you are allowed into a class for which you have been wait-listed, payment must be made within five business days or late fees will apply. The late add fee is refundable only if all classes you have registered for are canceled.

Fees

UA Network Charge—The UA network charge covers rapidly rising costs, especially in the maintenance and enhancement of the university-wide technology infrastructure. A two percent network charge is applied on a course-by-course basis to tuition for credit courses, and fees in lieu of tuition for non-credit courses. The minimum network charge per course is $3.

Technology Fee— The technology fee of $5 per credit hour to a maximum of $60 is used to support academic technology.

Activity Fee—The activity fee of $2 per credit hour is used to support student activities in the summer.

ASUAF Fee—All students enrolled in three or more credits during Summer Sessions will be charged a $10 ASUAF fee. This fee is used to provide basic student government administrative support services during the summer. Services included are KSUA (student radio station), recycling program, student concert board and student senate activities.

Student Health and Counseling Center Fee—Students enrolled in six credits or more during Summer Sessions will be assessed a health center fee of $66. This covers basic medical and counseling services at the center. Students who meet all of the following conditions may waive the health center fee: 1) no courses on the Fairbanks or University Park campuses, 2) not living in university housing, and 3) not purchasing the university student health insurance plan.

The health center fee is based on a student’s cumulative credit hours over the course of the summer. If a student plans to take a total of six credits during the summer he/she is encouraged to register early to take advantage of the health center during ALL the summer months.

Students who do not plan to take summer courses or are enrolled in less than six summer credits may use the center for a fee of $66 if they are enrolled in the upcoming fall semester for six or more credits and were eligible for health center services in the preceding spring semester.

Parking fee—All students, staff and faculty are required to have a current parking decal or short term parking permit displayed on their vehicle when parking on any UAF or UAFCTC location. Permits are now available for purchase using the Parking Online system at www.uaf.edu/parking/. Instructions are posted there with log-in information. Parking fees can be added to your student account at UAOnline (uaonline.alaska.edu). If you choose to purchase the permit in person at Facilities Services 114, the current DMV registration or documentation showing vehicle ownership is required. Affix the decal to the vehicle to complete the process and validate the permit. Check the Campus Map (www.uaf.edu/campusmap/) for a complete view of the layout of parking lots and buildings on campus. All yellow lots are keyed as UAF permit parking.

Parking fees are based on the combined credit hour enrollment at UAF, UAFCTC, CDE and any class held at a UAF location, regardless of the site of the unit offering that course. It is the responsibility of all students parking a vehicle on UAF property (on or off campus) to follow UAF parking regulations.

Refunds

Tuition may be refunded to students who drop courses. The amount of the refund depends on the date the action is taken. See Dates and Deadlines for refund dates. Material, field trip, technology, network and activity fees are only refundable during the 100% refund period. Refund processing is automatic for students who officially drop courses by published refund deadlines.

Canceled courses—If your class is canceled, you may add another class of equal credit and level at no additional tuition cost. You must pay any additional fees. If you do not add a replacement course, the Business Office will automatically process a credit to your account.

Exception to Policy: Appeal for Refund of Tuition—Appeals for refund of tuition are exceptions to policy and are only allowed in extraordinary cases. Approval is not automatic, and you need to provide documented evidence to support your request. Acceptable serious and compelling reasons may include:

1) death in immediate family,

2) serious illness or injury of student or immediate family, and

3) factors outside of student’s control (for example, major employment change, fire, flood).

Failure to comply with published deadlines or regulations is not a serious and compelling reason to seek a refund and will not be approved.

Appeals for refund of tuition must be submitted within 30 class days after the beginning of the next regular semester. Exception to Policy: Appeal for Refund of Tuition and Late Fee Removal forms are available online at www.uaf.edu/business/forms/ or through the Business Office in Signers’ Hall at the Fairbanks campus. Once received, the appeal will be evaluated by a campus-wide committee which will return a decision to the student. The decision of the committee is final. Contact the UAF Business Office (474-7384) for additional information.

Student Insurance

Health insurance—Health insurance is highly recommended for all students—especially students taking courses that involve outdoor activities or other elements of risk. International students are required to have health insurance.

Students enrolled in at least six credit hours during the summer are eligible to enroll in the university sponsored health insurance plan for a cost of $314. Payment must be made at the UAF Business Office by June 6, 2011.

Students who are not eligible for the student plan are strongly encouraged to buy other student health insurance. Alternate student health insurance plans are available from a variety of national insurers.

Please read the student health insurance brochure carefully for details of the plan. See www.uaf.edu/chc/ or go to www.uhcsr.com for more details.

For information on student accident insurance, see www.alaska.edu/risksafety/b_insurance/insurance-coverage/student-accident/.

Veterans Benefits

Veterans wishing to be certified for VA benefits should apply for certification as far in advance of Summer Sessions as possible. Only veterans who have been admitted to an eligible UAF degree or certificate program may be certified. For certification requirements, contact the UAF Financial Aid Office.
