UAF Museum of the NorthUniversity of Alaska Museum of the North

The University of Alaska Museum of the North is a thriving visitor attraction as well as a vital component of UAF’s research and education facilities.

The museum recently completed a new wing, doubling the size of the facility. Visible from vantage points around town, the dramatic architecture of the museum’s new wing is certain to become one of Alaska’s signature landmarks. The Rose Berry Alaska Art Gallery, the centerpiece of the museum’s new wing, features 2,000 years of Alaskan art—from ancient ivory carvings to contemporary paintings and sculptures. The Gallery of Alaska exhibit highlights include the state’s largest gold display, extensive displays of Alaska Native art and artifacts, and Blue Babe, a 36,000-year-old mummified steppe bison.

In addition to the exhibits, the museum presents artists’ residencies, lectures and family programs on a variety of topics throughout the year.

Behind the scenes, the museum holds more than 1.4 million artifacts and specimens representing millions of years of biodiversity and more than 11,000 years of cultural traditions in the North. These artifacts are used by faculty curators, university students and researchers around the world to study issues unique to Alaska and the circumpolar north.

Admission costs range from $5 to $10 and is free for museum members and UAF students with a current PolarExpress card. Parking is available behind the museum.
