3 person Intramural Volleyball Rules
PLAYERS:
1. Each team is composed of three players. If playing coed rules, one more of the opposite sex is allowed on the court at any time.
2. All players must have a valid Polar Express Card (with SRC membership) on the court in order to play.
3. Score sheets must be signed by a team representative at the end of the match and returned to the supervisor.
INJURY:
If an injury occurs during the game and a player cannot continue (and the team has no substitutes), the team with the injured player will have to forfeit.
PROTEST:
1. Any protest must be done right away with the Intramural Supervisor. Once the play continues the protest will not be accepted.
2. Protests concerning player eligibility will be decided by the Intramural Director.
OFFICIALS:
1. All games will be self officiated. If you cannot come to a resolution for the call, REPLAY the point.
2. Game time is forfeit time. A team has the option to play the second and third game if they arrive within 15 minutes after the first scheduled game. They will have already lost the first game.
GAME:
1. 15 minutes or a 25 rally point game whichever comes first. You must win by two.
2. Best of three match.
3. One time out thirty seconds in length per team per game.
SERVING:
Members of the serving team must not distract the opposing team or form a screen during service.
PLAYING:
1. If the ball has side-spin on a set, it may be called illegal.
2. On a hard driven ball, a defensive player may use any part of his/her body to play the ball.
NET PLAY:
1. A player may go under the net while playing the net as long as they do not interfere with other players on the court.
2. Players may not block, attack, or set a serve.
POINT OR SIDE OUT:
1. If any member of the receiving team commits an infraction, one (1) point is awarded to the serving side; if the infraction is made by the serving team, a side out is called and a point is awarded.
SERVICE:
1. Choice of which team serves first at the start of game is determined by the TOSS OF A COIN. The winner of the toss gets the serve or choice of court.
2. Player continues as a server until side out is called. After side out, opponent becomes the server.
3. The two players alternate the service position after side outs.
4. Player must strike the ball with one hand clearly over the net so that if untouched, it would land within the opponents court.
5. A served ball can hit the net.
RECEIVING AND RETURNING, PLAYING THE BALL:
1. On serve, the ball must be received with a legal pass..
2. A return that passes over that part of the net between the sidelines is in play.
3. A return may be recovered from the net provided the player avoids contact with it.
4. After once contacting the ball, a player cannot touch it again until it has been touched by the other player. (Exception: a block touch doesn't count as a hit).
5. No double hits are allowed.
6. The ball may not be thrown.
7. The ball cannot be hit with two open hands (behind the head, below the waist, or underhand) . The ball may never rest in the palms of the receiver.
8. If the ball is returned over the net with a set, the player must have their entire body parallel with the direction of the set.
9. Open hand dinks are not allowed.
OTHER INFRACTIONS NOT PREVIOUSLY CITED INCLUDE:
1. Serving illegally or out of turn.
2. Catching or holding the ball on failing to make a legal return.
3. Touching it twice in succession.
4. Contacting the net or reaching over it while the ball is in play. A player is not considered to have contacted the net if a hard driven ball causes it to touch a player.
(NOTE: should two opponents contact the net simultaneously, neither is penalized; it is a replay)
5. Reaching under the net and touching the ball or opponent while the ball is in the opponent's court.
6. Touching the ball when it has already been touched three times on your side.
