On Saturday, November 20, Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), faculty, staff, community members, and other students came together in celebration of Diwali, an Indian holiday celebrating the triumph of good over evil, and fundraising event for Project Ummid, a micro-finance endeavor by SIFE that awards loans to impoverished women in India.
SIFE's Diwali event featured authentic Indian cuisine, live performances, and imported crafts from India.
UAF School of Management and the Associated Students of Business (ASB) honored Bernie Karl as the 2010 Business Leader of the Year. Bernie is the owner of K&K Recycling and Chena Hot Springs Resort. Recipients are selected on merits of leadership, business excellence, educational support, and community service.

Students Who Enjoy Ecnomic Thinking (SWEET) hosted Dr. Alexandre Padilla. Dr. Padilla presented "Immigration: Myths & Realities" on Friday, February 25, 2011 at 10:30am and 3:30pm in Schaible Auditorium.
Students Who Enjoy Economic Thinking (SWEET) hosted guest speaker Larry Persily. Persily presented "Alaska Gas Pipeline: Facts and Fiction, Dollars and Sense" twice on Friday, November 19 at 10:30 am and 2:15 am in the Schaible Auditorium.
The School of Management is proud to congratulate Dion Knelsen for receiving the Joel Wiegart Award, an award that recognizes one outstanding graduating senior man each year. This honor is given to a student who is nominated and then voted on by committee as having outstanding character,personality, scholarship, extracurricular activities, and contributions to the University and Fairbanks communities.
Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team will move on to Nationals
On March 19, 2010, the UAF SIFE team took first place at the 2010 SIFE Regionals Competition in Orange Country, CA. SIFE will be heading to Minneapolis to compete with 140 other universities and colleges in the National Exposition on May 11-13, 2010.
The UAF Accounting Club (GAAP) provides free income tax assistance, preparation and electronic filing. The GAAP club will be at Wood Center every Saturday in the spring to help you with your taxes. Click here for details.
Fred Smits, Executive Director of Infrastructure Technology Services at OIT, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 30th. Fred had been with the university since 1997, providing steady and sure leadership for the critical but seldom seen services that keep the university’s online systems running every day. Fred was an alumnus of the School of Management, graduating in December 2010 with his MBA. He also participated in the very first Arctic Innovation Competition, winning a $100 honorable mention.
In remembrance of his long and dedicated service to the University of Alaska Office of Information Technology, the Fred Smits Business Scholarship has been created. To contribute to this scholarship in honor of Fred Smits, go here.

Director of the Homeland Security and Emergency Management Program
Cam received a BS in Biology from Monmouth University (1986) and a MA in International Relations from Webster University (1995). Cam has extensive military and homeland security training. Upon retirement from the military after 24 years of service and with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Cam was awarded the prestigious Legion of Merit medal.
Nicole Cundiff Director of the Northern Leadership Center
Nicole received a BA in Psychology with a minor in Marketing (2002), a MBA (2005), a MA in Applied Experimental Psychology (2007), and a Ph.D. in Applied Psychology (2010) from Southern Illinois University. Long before Nicole permanently moved to Fairbanks this fall, she worked with Sheri Layral to advance the UAF Northern Leadership Center, and together they are shaping its future.
Business Administration Instructor
Jim has a BS in Occupational Education with a concentration in business administration from Wayland Baptist University (1999), and a MS in Business Organizational Management from La Verne University (2001). Jim served in the U.S. Air Force from 1975-1998, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. Jim has experience teaching at Wayland Baptist, Axia College, and the UAF School of Management.
Accounting Instructor Ruth has a BBA from Loma Linda University (1990) and a Master of Accountancy from Auburn University (1991). She has worked at top accounting firms in California, Oregon, and Alaska, and has extensive tax experience. Ruth has taught accounting at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and Accounting and Financial Management at Wayland Baptist University and the University of La Verne.
Kyong Hollen presents her gift to UAF Chancellor Brian Rogers and SOM Dean Mark Herrmann
Local entrepreneur Kyong Hollen recently made a $10,000 donation to the UAF School of Management. The Kyong Hollen Business Scholarship will be available beginning the 2010 fall semester. Her scholarship will allow two students to receive an annual disbursement of $5,000 each. More
