SOM mourns the passing of Dr. Susan Herman

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

The School of Management is deeply saddened by the death of Dr. Susan Herman, Professor of Organizational Behavior and the Director of the Northern Leadership Center. Susan's passion for life, her work and her extended family will be missed.  A remembrance service for Dr. Herman is scheduled for Friday, September 11th, at 4 p.m. in the Wood Center.

At UAF and in the Fairbanks Community, Susan touched many lives. She was the founder of the Northern Leadership Center and designer of the UAF Summer Leadership Institute, which brings together high school students from across the state to foster their leadership potential. She designed Leadership Fairbanks for the Chamber of Commerce and was the faculty mentor for the Associated Students of Business. Before coming to UAF, Susan was Professor of Management at Keene State College in NH, where she was active in establishing the Cohen Center for Holocaust Studies. She also served as co-editor of the Journal of Management Education. As a young adult she co-founded Interlocken Center for Experimental Learning in Hillsboro Upper Village, NH (now Windsor Mountain International).

Her various careers have all focused on helping people work to develop the potential of their organizations and personally thrive in organizational settings. Her doctoral studies in Organizational Development and her subsequent research and consulting practice focused on leadership and on ways managers can build organizational commitment to enhance organizational productivity and employee satisfaction. Some of her insights were summarized in her book, Hiring Right, a Practical Guide for Managers (Sage Press).

Dr. Herman leaves us well-loved and challenged.

"She pushed me to do more, be more, produce more, and touch our students more.” Charlie Dexter, UAF Professor of Applied Business

"Mostly what I will miss are Susan's hugs, occasional kisses on the cheek and her always asking me how I was doing." Mark Herrmann, Dean, School of Management

Dr. Herman was a dynamic, energetic, and inspiring professor, mentor and peer. All who knew her were influenced by her willingness to serve, her ability to draw people and ideas together, her tenacious faithfulness to a cause, and the never-ending amount of encouragement and support she would offer.

Many more memories of Susan can be found on a CaringBridge website, including photos and information about upcoming memorial services. A memorial service for Susan will be held in Fairbanks later this summer.

Professor Herman passed away after a short and aggressive illness of pancreatic cancer. She is survived by her husband and UAF Associate, Professor, Gary Kofinas; her three children Melissa, Thomas, and Sarah; and her five spectacular grandchildren Tia, Felix, Simon, Miriam, and Joshua,
