This minor with a specialization in gerontology grew out of the partnership UAF established with the Alaska Geriatric Education Center (AKGEC) consortium in 2003 with a grant from the Bureau of Health Professions, Health Resources and Services Administration of the U.S. Deaprtment of Health and Human Services. The Northern Region Geriatric Education Center is the AKGEC program for the UAF campus and Interior Alaska. The shared purpose is to prepare present and future health care professionals to serve Alaska's growing elderly population, including those who live in remote and underserved urban areas, through continuing education training opportunities, classroom, practical and distance/telehealth education.
