Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD)

Beta of Alaska Chapter

Alpha Kappa Delta is an international sociological honor society. The Beta of Alaska Chapter was formed in 1998, and was revitalized in 2003 by the infusion of a new cohort of enthusiastic students and faculty. Membership is open to high-achieving sociology students who are at least in their junior year. Here at UAF, new members are inducted at an annual January ceremony sponsored by the Department of Sociology. To celebrate AKD members' achievement, the Department of Sociology also gives AKD members beautiful teal honor cords to be worn during the graduation ceremony.

The Beta of Alaska Chapter has been very active recently. Two students submitted papers to the Pacific Sociological Association annual meetings in 2006, and AKD, the Department of Sociology, and UAF's Office of Sponsored Programs helped to fund their travel. Members also get together regularly for formal meetings, movie nights, and other activities. In 2006, AKD organized Bowling for Equality, a fun-filled kick-off event for SpringFest that was a huge success.

If you are interested in joining AKD, please visit the Alpha Kappa Delta official website, linked below. If you qualify, chat with your sociology faculty advisor to make sure you receive a formal invitation to the annual January induction ceremony. Becoming a member in AKD is one of the highest honors bestowed upon undergraduate students, and we welcome your participation.
