Geography Program Brings Jared Diamond to UA
Diamond speaks to over a thousand in Anchorage and Fairbanks
Dr. Jared Diamond, author of "Guns, Germs and Steel," and "Collapse" spoke in Anchorage and Fairbanks at the invitation of the UA Geography Program.
From KTUU Anchorage:
"Anchorage, Alaska - A large crowd jammed into the University of Alaska Anchorage Wendy Williamson Auditorium tonight for a lecture. The subject was the collapse of civilization: the author, a winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Professor Jared Diamond had a message disturbing to both liberals and conservatives.
The news that might rankle conservatives: global warming is real and caused at least in part by the burning of fossil fuels. The bad news for liberals: nuclear energy must not be dismissed out of hand as part of the solution. Tonight, 1,100 people turned out to hear Jared Diamond speak."
From the Alaska Daily News:
"Suppose a college professor came to town to talk about long-vanished civilizations and the fate of the world. Would you want to listen?
You would if you're anything like the hundreds of Alaskans who filled the University of Alaska Anchorage's Williamson Auditorium far beyond capacity Monday night -- all to hear a lecture by UCLA geography professor Jared Diamond, whose latest book, "Collapse," details how particular societies fall into ruin."
