Article I: BASIC EXPECTATIONS OF MEMBERSHIP
Section 1: Members shall know and understand the ideals expressed in the Ritual of Sigma Phi Epsilon, and will try to incorporate the principles of Virtue, Diligence and Brotherly Love into their daily lives.
Section 2: Members are responsible for becoming familiar with the history of Sigma Phi Epsilon during the Sigma stage of the Quest.
Section 3: Members shall strive for academic achievement and will practice academic integrity.
Section 4: Members shall exhibit responsible conduct at all time, because personal actions reflect not only on the individuals, but upon the entire chapter and other Greek letter organizations as well.
Section 5: Members shall respect the dignity of all persons and therefore will not physically, mentally, psychologically, emotionally, or sexually abuse or haze any human being.
All women deserve the respect due to all persons and shall not suffer from
any verbal or physical degradation. It is the duty of every member to act as a
proper host to female guests at fraternity functions and to act as a gentleman
at all times, as members' actions reflect upon the character of the entire
chapter.
Section 6: Members shall respect the privacy of others and honor any trust that may be placed upon them.
Section 7: Every member shall respect, foster and strive to protect the rights of any other member, including the rights to:
a. Equality: to be treated as fairly as any other member.
b. Participate: no member shall be denied the opportunity to get involved at any chapter event.
c. Discuss: every member shall have the opportunity to express his opinion, granted that his view is given in a respectable manner.
d. Vote: every member in good standing will be allowed to cast his vote and no member shall influence in any way another's vote.
e. Individuality: each member shall be accepted with personal qualities, which make him both similar and different from others.
Section 8: Members shall respect the property of others and therefore will not abuse or tolerate the abuse of others property.
Section 9: Members shall meet financial obligations in a timely manner. Those members not doing so may receive a penalty imposed by the Standards Board.
Section 10: Members shall be aware of the dangers of illegal drugs and will not support the misuse of illegal drugs, especially when the chapter can be associated with these actions.
Section 11: Members shall acknowledge that a clean and attractive environment is essential to both mental and physical health, and therefore will see that the chapter property will be properly cleaned and maintained at all times.
Section 12: Every member will attend the required events of Sigma Phi Epsilon on time, with the exception of emergency or a prearranged excusable reason approved by the person in charge of that event.
Section 13: Members will expect other members to abide by these guidelines and will confront those members who violate them.
ARTICLE II: DUE PROCESS
Section 1: All members have the right of Due Process when confronted with a violation of the Standards Code.
Section 2: Due Process procedures:
a. Any complaint must be submitted in writing within two weeks of the violation to the Standards Board. Complaints are only accepted from members of this fraternity.
b. The Standards Board will set an immediate meeting to review the facts concerning the violation. Pending findings of the Standards Board, further actions may be recommended.
c. Separate contact will be made with the member(s) submitting the complaint and the member(s) named in the complaint.
d. The
Standards Board will determine the guilt or innocence of the member(s) by vote:
1. Vote must pass with a majority of the Standards Board.
2. In the event of a tie, the Chaplain will cast the deciding vote.
e. In the event of a guilty verdict, any punishment will be decided and administered by the Standards Board.
Section 3: Appeal Procedures:
a. Appeal Procedures shall be in writing to the Executive Committee, which will then determine if an appeal is warranted.
b. If an appeal is warranted, a joint Executive Committee and Standards Board meeting will re-evaluate the issue with the Chaplain presenting the evidence and abstaining from any voting.
c. If the appeal is denied, the member will receive written documentation as to the reason for the denial.
Section 4: The Standards Board reserves the right to take further action against any offenses which violate local, state and federal laws or any University regulations.
Section 5: Any Due Process outcome will be reported to all members at the next chapter meeting.
ARTICLE III: AMENDMENTS
Section 1: Proposed amendments to the Standards Code shall be submitted in writing to the Standards Board.
a. In order to amend, the proposed amendment must receive a majority vote from the Standards Board. The Chaplain is not allowed to vote unless there is a tie, in which case he will cast the deciding vote.
b. Any appeal shall be resubmitted in writing to both the Standards Board and the Executive Committee. Both the Board and the Committee will vote on all approved appeals with the tie going to the Chapter President.
c. Any proposed amendment will be allowed only one appeal per semester.
Section
2: Any amendments made after the fact shall not be used to
punish any member for any previous actions, but shall serve as a guide for
future actions.
