With the installation of our SEC on November 1, 1992, SigEp became the first social Greek organization to pioneer the state of Alaska. This became possible largely due to the efforts of our first President and highly respected alumnus to the Chapter, Mike Colgrove.
On March 1, 1997, the SEC was chartered as the Alaska Alpha Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon. We have faced many challenges that remain unfamiliar to the other chapters of SigEp. We were not merely establishing a new chapter in an existing Greek system. We were, and still are, CREATING an entire Greek way of life, not only for the UA-Fairbanks campus, but for our entire state of Alaska. In a cooperative effort with Sigma Sigma Sigma (Alaska's only Sorority, with a chapter here in Fairbanks and one in Anchorage), we continue to clear from the landscape the high prejudices and misinformed stereotypes of Greek life, which had been especially prevalent in a state that is relatively inexperience with Greek life. We continue to expand a foundation on which to build our valuable way of life upon.
We face and consistently overcome the challenges of being in a remote and isolated location, extreme conditions of living, and increased financial burdens (i.e. the costs of travel in and out of the state and the shipping of supplies).
Our Chapter's achievements include the SigEp Winner's Circle ('93-'99), the Manpower Excellence Award ('96-'99), the Scholarship Excellence Cup ('00), the SigEp Dean's List ('00), the Phi Beta Kappa Wheelhouse for a 3.29 Chapter GPA for Spring Semester 2004, and over 2,000 hours of community service during the Fall semester of 1999 alone. The Alaska Alpha Chapter bears witness that the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity as a whole far exceeds the expectations that are placed upon the average Greek organization.
