Security preparedness at UAF
UAF continues to examine the mechanisms we have in place regarding security and safety and ask what can we do to improve our prevention and preparedness.
Preparedness is the key
Information about what to do in case of a campus emergency is available online at http://www.uaf.edu/alert/. Please familiarize yourself with the resources there. We are all responsible for being prepared for an emergency situation. When an incident occurs on campus, the front page of the UAF website will direct you to more information.
Effective communications during a crisis is a critical response component. UAF's crisis communication plan serves as a guide to help facilitate the rapid release of accurate information.
UAF is committed to maintaining a safe campus environment for staff, faculty and students
Emergencies can occur at any time and without warning. While we can’t prepare for every type of emergency, careful planning with an emphasis on safety will assist UAF community members in responding appropriately to crises.
Prevention efforts will always be some of the most important things we can do to keep ourselves, and others, safe. Many offices and departments are involved in ongoing and well thought out efforts at UAF to prevent harmful events from occurring and to keep us all as safe as is reasonably possible.
In an emergency
- Call 911 and provide as much information as possible.
All emergencies on the Fairbanks campus and at UAF facilities within the Fairbanks area should be reported immediately to the UAF Emergency Communication Center (police and fire dispatch center) at 907-474-7721.
Emergency phones
- All campus phones and pay phones have 911 access. Emergency phones are marked with blue lights and available throughout the UAF campus.
Security escort
- Call 474-7721 at any time to have a Community Service Officer escort you to your car, campus residence or any other building on the UAF campus.
Counseling available
- Faculty and staff can help by alerting the appropriate staff members if someone is behaving in an unusual way. The Center for Health and Counseling is available to address questions relating to health and personal well-being, and has developed a brochure to provide assistance in dealing with behavior and stress issues.
Note: The UAF Police Department has taken the lead in teaching other law enforcement agencies throughout Alaska about incident command responses. The policies and procedures are refined each time the training exercises are conducted, and the UAF Police and Fire departments have a close working relationship with all law enforcement agencies in Fairbanks and throughout the state.
