The UAF Institute of Marine Science Seward Marine Center is home base for the UNOLS research vessel Alpha Helix, used by scientists from around the world to conduct marine research on the Gulf of Alaska and far reaches of the North Pacific and Bering Sea. The ship will be in port the first couple days of our meeting. |

| A view of Resurrection Bay from the Alpha Helix dock. The derelict pilings are remains of a railroad dock destroyed in a killer tsunami that swept over the Seward waterfront after the 1964 Alaska earthquake. So be ready to head for the high ground! | Eagles can be seen year-round in Seward. This shot was taken in February from an office at the Seward Marine Center. This concrete reminder of the 1964 tsunami is known as "The Killing Wall" because the eagles take their prey (sometimes live fish, birds, small pets, etc.) there to eat it and fight over it. However, since the SeaLife Center put up their pigeon guillemot decoys next door, the eagles don't like the wall as much. | |||
