  • SDA Activities (What we do for fun & profit)

In addition to our productions, SDA holds other theatrical events for members and the community. The annual Monkey Ball, given a new color and theme and held each spring, is our main event, but we have traditionally held the Halloween Haunted Theatre and monthly Open Stages as well.

    • The Rocky Horror Picture Show Cabaret (Fall 1999)
    • The Mandarin Monkey Ball (Spring 1999)
    • The UAF Haunted Theatre (Fall 1998)
A near-annual fundraiser for SDA, the Fall 1999 version is the only one we have pictures of at the moment.
    • The Blue Monkey Ball (Spring 1998)
    • The Gold Monkey Ball, Wedding, Banquet & Orgy (Spring 1997)
The Gold Monkey seems to be undocumented by any available photographic evidence, so whether or not it truly took place is locked in the faulty memories of the faculty and students who claim to have been involved. The second Ball is said to have united the dance/cabaret/live music style of the first Ball with another annual Department custom, the Drama Banquet, an awards ceremony and calorific dinner. Though student surveys showed the guests enjoyed the situation, the Theatre students weren't entirely comfortable with opening the Banquet to the public. The Ball took place in the Salisbury Lab Theatre, and featured a collaborative presentation of Anton Chekov's "The Wedding" performed by the members of SDA and directed jointly by Karl Kalen and Jason Chapman.
