Registration details
Registration availability and exceptions
Web registration is available every day at UAOnline (http://uaonline.alaska.edu) through Jan. 29, 2010. Web registration closes at 11:59 p.m. Jan. 29, 2010.
If you are eligible for registration, you may use the web to register for your courses, except for:
- Special permission courses
- Individual study courses
- More than 18 undergraduate credits
- Courses that appear to conflict in time. These courses require instructor approval and will be made available for you to add to your schedule by the Registrar's Office after you register for your other courses.
- Registration hold. If you have a registration hold, you may not register until the hold is removed by the initiating office. Registration holds and initiating offices may include:
- Unpaid tuition and fees/outstanding balances on your student account (i.e., parking fines, course fees). See the Business Office, or call 474-7384.
- Judicial/disciplinary holds. See Student and Enrollment Services, or call 474-7317.
- Other registration holds. See the Registrar's Office, or call 474-6300. Since UAF is part of a statewide system, a hold at one unit of the University of Alaska will affect your registration at all UA units.
- One section per class: You can't register and/or wait list yourself for different sections of the same class. If you do, you'll be dropped from all but one section, and that may not be the one you prefer. See "Wait Listing".
Review your registration form
Please review the information printed on your registration form and on UAOnline. Items marked with an asterisk (*) below are your responsibility to update at UAOnline. Inform the Registrar's Office of any other changes. The following will help you review your form:
- Name: This is how your name appears on your official records. If your name is listed incorrectly, please inform the Registrar's Office.
- *Mailing address and phone: Keep your mailing address updated by making changes at http://uaonline.alaska.edu.
- *To forward your UAF assigned e-mail address, follow the directions at www.alaska.edu/google/.
- Permanent address and phone: Please make sure this address and phone number are correct.
- College, degree, major: In order to change these codes, you must complete a change of major form.
- Level: Indicates your status (graduate, undergraduate, non-degree, etc.).
- Residency status: Check your residency status prior to paying your tuition and fees. Submit an Application for Resident Tuition to the Admissions Office if you need to change your residency status. These applications with supporting documentation are due prior to the published first day of instruction.
- Advisor name: Your advisor according to university records.
Information release
The university may release certain directory information to the public on a routine basis unless a student requests, in writing, that the university not release it.
Wait listing
What wait listing means
When a class is full, it is listed as "closed." Some courses offer a wait list option. If you want to be wait listed for a closed class, select "wait list" from the drop down menu on the Registration screen at UAOnline and click Submit Changes. If you are registering in person, the registration clerk can put you on wait lists for any closed classes.
Restrictions on wait listing
You will not remain on or have access to the wait list for a class if:
- you are already enrolled or wait listed in another section of the same class,
- the wait listed class conflicts with another class in which you are enrolled or wait listed,
- the wait listed class would exceed your maximum allowed credits, or
- you have holds on your account.
After you are wait listed
You may complete registration and even pay tuition and fees with a wait listed class. However, you aren't charged for a wait listed course, and it doesn't count toward determining your status as a full-time or part-time student.
Your position on the wait list
Use the web to check your status on a wait list. Follow the instructions to list your courses. You will be advised of your status in each course (either enrolled or wait listed). If you no longer want to be wait listed for a class, you can drop from the wait list by following the instructions for dropping a course.
Start attending classes on the first day
Attend the first day of class for any classes for which you have been wait listed. Let the instructor know you are on the wait list and ask if any additional students will be allowed to enroll in the class. If you are given permission to enroll in the class, you must get a signed special permission form from the instructor and take the form to the Registrar's Office.
If space becomes available in a class in which you have been wait listed and your name is at the top of the wait list, you will be moved into the class, unless:
- you have holds on your account,
- the time conflicts with another class,
- you are already enrolled in another section of the class, or
- adding the class would exceed your maximum allowed credits.
It is your responsibility to check your status in wait listed courses through the first day of instruction. If you no longer want to be wait listed for a course, contact the Registrar's Office immediately so you will not be placed in -- and charged tuition and fees for -- a course you do not want.
Time limits on wait listing
Wait lists are updated by the Registrar's Office until the first day of instruction for all courses. If by that time you are not enrolled in a course for which you are wait listed, you must obtain special permission from the instructor of the course. If it appears you will not be able to enroll in a course for which you are wait listed, you should select and enroll in a replacement class by Jan. 29, 2010.
Fee payment for wait listed classes
- Wait listed classes appear on your schedule but are not included in the total number of credits needed to qualify for financial aid.
- Tuition and fees are calculated only for the credits you are officially enrolled in and do not include the wait listed classes.
- If it appears you won't get into the wait listed class by the published last day to pay tuition and fees, you must immediately pay for any courses you are enrolled in to avoid late charges.
- No late add fee is charged if you are allowed into a class for which you were wait listed after the published last day to pay tuition and fees, provided you pay for any other classes on time and pay for the wait listed classes within five business days.
- If you are wait listed, it is your responsibility to find out from UAOnline if you have been enrolled in the class. The Registrar's Office updates wait lists only through the first day of instruction.
If, after you pay your tuition and fees, you are allowed into a class for which you have been wait listed, payment must be made within five business days or late fees will apply.
Individual study
To register for an individual study course, get an individual study approval form from the Registrar's Office, or download it from the web at www.uaf.edu/reg/forms/individual.pdf. Have it signed by your instructor and department head from the department in which the course is being taught, and turn it in with your registration or add/drop form. Individual study course numbers end in -97. The course section number for an individual study course will be assigned by the Registrar's Office after you register for your other classes.
Permission-only classes
To register for a class with a "by permission" restriction, obtain a signed permission form from the instructor or department in which the course is offered and turn it in with your completed registration materials. If it is submitted prior to in-person registration, the appropriate courses will be made available for you to add to your schedule via UAOnline.
Auditing a class
Students who want to enroll in one or more courses for informational purposes may register as an auditor if space is available and auditing is permitted in the class. You pay the standard credit fees for the course, but the credits are not included in the computation of study load for full-time/part-time determination or for overload status. If you want to audit a course for which you are already registered for credit, you must make the change by the end of the second full week of instruction and follow the drop/add process for changes to and from audit status in a course. Changing from credit to audit after this date requires the approval of the instructor of the course as well as your advisor. The deadline for late changes from credit to audit is the same as for student-initiated withdrawals.
Mandatory course placement
Make sure you've met English and math placement requirements and prerequisites or you will not be able to register for the following courses: ANTH F100X, DEVE courses, DEVM courses, ECON F100X, ENGL F111X, HIST F100X, MATH F103X, MATH F107X, MATH F161X, MATH 200X, MATH 201X, MATH 202X, MATH 262X, MATH 272X, PS F100X, SOC F100X, STAT 200X, natural sciences core courses.
Credit/no credit option
The credit/no credit option enables you to enroll in courses without affecting your overall GPA. One elective course per semester can be taken under this option. You must apply for the option by the third Friday after the first day of instruction. Credit/no credit option forms are available at the Registrar's Office and may be turned in at that office.
Overloads
If you register for more than 18 undergraduate credits, you must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and written overload approval from your advisor.
