B.S. in Natural Resources Management |
Forestry Option Alaska's boreal forest is one of the few remaining biomes where natural cycles and processes are still the norm. Because of this, it serves as a unique natural laboratory to study boreal forest dynamics and feedback with global climate change and other long-term environmental effects. UAF forestry students are thus at the forefront of research into some of the most visible natural resource issues confronting society. The forestry option focuses on the multiple-resource management of forests and their associated ecosystems. Our students learn the fundamentals of forest inventory, protection, use, and regeneration. Students also develop career skills through a blend of classroom, laboratory, and field work. Our program will take you out into the forests of Alaska to see first hand the impacts of browsing animals, fires and logging, and the ecology of the boreal forest. Students and researchers have access to the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest and the Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed, as well as facilities at the Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station in Fairbanks. The forestry option leads to a professional degree in forestry, the Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources Management/Forestry. The program is accredited by the Society of American Foresters, which is recognized as the specialized accrediting agency for forestry in the United States. Links:
