SAFE DRIVER PROCEDURES

PURPOSE: To outline responsibilities and establish driver safety procedures at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF).

OBJECTIVE: To prevent motor vehicle accidents, injuries, and financial loss to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, its employees, students and the public.

SCOPE: Applies to all University of Alaska staff, faculty, students and student employees who may be required to drive university vehicles, or rental vehicles while on university business.


I. PROCEDURES

University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) staff, faculty, students and student employees, when required to drive UAF vehicles, or rental vehicles while on university business, shall comply with the following requirements:

A. Each staff, faculty, student employee who must regularly drive a UAF vehicle, or rental vehicle, as part of normal job requirements, will provide upon request, a copy of their driving record to their supervisor. This record should cover at least the last three years of driving history.

B. A driving verification form when requested will be completed and turned in to the department head for approval prior to the use of a university vehicle.

C. The staff, faculty, student employee's Dean or Director will make the final decision as to whether or not an individual will be allowed to use a university vehicle after review of the driver record information.

D. Individual driving records of the authorized individuals will be maintained in the office of the Dean or Director. These records should be reviewed annually, to ensure good driving records.

E. Individuals with a moving violation in the past three years or those with violations involving driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs should not be given permission to operate university vehicles.

F. Staff, faculty, and student employees who are responsible for driving university vehicles, and/or rental vehicles while on university business, must take a Driver Safety Course prior to vehicle operation. The can be accomplished by contacting the Environmental, Health, Safety, and Risk Management (EHS&RM) Department at 474-5413.

G. Personnel affiliated with UAF, but who are not UAF employees or students, should not be permitted to drive UAF vehicles. Exceptions to this must be granted in writing before the fact by the appropriate Dean or Director. These individuals also need to attend the Driver Safety Course offered by EHS&RM.
