WHAT TO DO DURING AN EARTHQUAKE


RESIDENCE HALLS AND OFFICES:

    DO NOT evacuate until the earthquake is over - take cover in a safe spot* until then.

 * Safe spots/places are under tables or desks and away from windows.  Doorways are fine, but watch out for the door!  Beware of ceiling tiles, light bulbs, large pieces of furniture, and heavy fixtures like computers or televisions.

    Know where the predetermined meeting place is.  See evacuation signs, ask your RA, or office assistant.

    When evacuating grab a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, a hat, sturdy shoes, and a jacket.

    Take any winter gear available.

    Do not try to salvage anything larger than a backpack.

    When evacuating, watch out for people who may need your help getting out.

    Be careful of any immediate hazards, such as broken glass or fires.

    Evacuate slowly and carefully.  DO NOT us elevators or windows.

    Fire alarms and/or sprinklers may be activated.

    Do not use the phone - emergency services need them clear.

    Close the door behind you when evacuating.

    Get out immediately once the earthquake stops; emergency personnel will organize volunteers after the building occupants are accounted for.

    Go directly to the predetermined meeting place.

    Report your room number and condition of the room to emergency personnel.


LABORATORIES:

    DO NOT evacuate until the earthquake is over - take cover in a safe spot* until then.

    Turn of gas valves.

    Close fume hoods all the way.

    Check for fires, spilled chemicals or other immediate hazards.  Report if any of these conditions exist to emergency personnel.

    If safely possible, shut off utilities to the lab.

    Account for all personnel and check for any injuries.

    Know where the predetermined meeting place is.
