CRCD Early Childhood Education

The UAF College of Rural and Community Development early childhood education program provides students with a solid foundation in child development and experience in a highly satisfying a career nurturing young children.  This exciting profession is referred to by many names such as preschool, nursery school, daycare, Head Start, and Kindergarten.  These names represent a variety of program styles, but the goal is the same - to help children develop to the maximim of their intellectual, social, emotional and physical abilities and provide support for families. 

Program Overview

Three exciting degree options offer flexibility for your educational goals.  A 30 credit certificate provides an introduction to the profession, a 60 credit A.A.S. degree prepares teachers for working with children, and a 129 credit B.A degree offers concentrated Studies in administration, curriculum, and family support.  Graduates of the BA are well prepared to continue their education for an elementary teaching degree through the education department. 

In association with the ECE program, Bunnell House Early Childhood Lab School, located on the main UAF campus, provides rich observation and practicum experiences for ECE students.  The staff at the lab school is well qualified to support and guide you during your hands-on experiences.

Career Opportunities

Careers for early childhood education graduates include: preschool teachers, infant care providers, recreation leaders, parenting educators, curriculum specialists, licensing and regulatory experts, directors, family assistance administrators, and aides in elementary schools.  Due to high demand for qualified early childhood professionals, graduates usually have a variety of options for employment.  Former graduates of our program include individuals who teach in preschools, oweners of child care programs, work as parent educators, provide family child care, provide on-going training for early childhood professionals, direct programs, and teach college courses.
