The University of Alaska established the Northwest Community College in Nome in 1975 as a result of hard work by area residents, especially the board of the Nome Public School District. In its first year, the college generated three times as many credits as expected, enrolling 271 students. A branch of the University of Alaska Fairbanks since 1987, Northwest Campus continues to help students from the Bering Strait region achieve their educational, workforce training and personal goals.

During the 2007-08 academic year:
• Enrollment increased by 30 percent over the prior year.
• 910 residents of the Bering Strait region enrolled through Northwest
Campus for courses at NWC and other University of Alaska
campuses.
• Five full-time faculty members and 63 adjuncts taught for NWC.
• Workforce training included courses in welding, construction trades,
certified nurse aide skills, small engine repair, aviation, high latitude
range management, and office software.
• Courses in ceramics, painting, metal sculpture design, creative
writing, desktop publishing, kuspuk sewing, arctic survival, birding
and subarctic gardening drew many students to the campus.
• Northwest Campus observed the International Polar Year by bringing
a series of eight lecturers to Nome. Using distance technology, these
experts in climate change, history, anthropology, language and art
reached a total audience of 717 people in nine rural communities.
