UAF Army ROTC

Verena Hawkes

Supply Technician

Have you been in the military?

Yes. I was commissioned through the University of Maine ROTC program into the Quartermaster Corps. I served in both Active and Reserve positions in Germany, Missouri, Texas, Belgium, Bosnia, and Alaska, where I retired after 26 years as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Previous jobs?

I worked at 650th Military Intelligence Group in Belgium for over ten years.   In Fairbanks I have worked as a Technical Writer, a Combined Arms Collective Training Facility Specialist, and a Range Facility Specialist.

What part of the ROTC job do you enjoy the most?

I really enjoy interacting with the cadets. I am in a unique position to mentor and guide them in an informal setting outside of the classroom, and it’s fun watching them learn, mature, and develop their leadership skills.

What do you want potential ROTC Cadets to know (about the Army or about being a soldier/officer)?

The Army is no different than any other job: there are good times and bad times, and you will work with many different kinds of people.   Your Army experience will be what you make it: it is all about having the right attitude. You can have a highly successful career if you treat each Soldier with dignity and respect, listen to your NCOs, become an expert at your job, and remember to laugh along the way.   Being in the Army is challenging and fun and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who takes pride in being an American and has a sense of adventure.
