UAF Army ROTC

MSG Donald G. Ramey

Senior Army Instructor

Why did you join the Army?

I initially joined the VA National guard for College money. Then   I went on Active Duty because that magical job that I was promised after college did not come. Not enough expierence, over qualified, under qualified etc.   So I sought out a recruiter and 19 years later here I am today.

What have you gotten out of your Army experience?

I have seen over 11 different countries and over 200 cities since joining. I have met countless people both good and bad, and I have learned that life and work are what you make of it.

What part of the Army do you enjoy the most?

Training Soldiers, seeing that light bulb when they finally get what it is I am trying to teach them.

What was your best assignment and why?

Alaska 96-99, because I had a chain of Command and an NCO support channel that challenged me and other leaders to become better, also when we were done with work they encouraged us to experience, Alaska.

What do you want potential ROTC Cadets to know (about the Army or about being a soldier/officer)?

This is not a decision to take lightly and should be thought through, because one day cadets will be leading someone’s son or daughter potentially into harm’s way
