UAF Army ROTC

SFC Anthony L. Smith

Senior Military Instructor

Why did you join the Army?
I knew that everything I had accomplished up to high school was a product of supportive schools and parents.  I knew that the Army was what I would like to do while in High School.   I attended the Jr ROTC program for four years. I graduated from High School and joined the Army, and went to Basic Training at Fort Benning GA were I completed my Infantry Training.

What have you gotten out of your Army experience?
As a young man I needed to be part of a team I played sports, ran track and was on the ROTC Drill teams in my High School. I still felt incomplete so I joined the biggest and best team of all the United State Army. It taught me much while I jumped out of planes, destroyed enemy bunkers and led hundreds of soldiers.  Most importantly, I am confident in my capabilities in any situation.  But I now have the professionalism and skills to accomplish my goals.

What part of being in the Army do you enjoys the most?
I enjoy the camaraderie not only between those currently in the service, but also with generations before me.  The service to my nation and the many friends that I have met on the way we have laid in the rain, snow, and the sand together and I can truly say that these guys and girls are the brothers and sisters that I have away from home.

What was your best (most exotic/challenging) assignment and Why?
My deployment to Iraq was both exotic and challenging. The saying goodbye to the fallen soldiers that were assigned to my unit and those that served with me. Attending the US Army Pathfinder and Jumpmaster school was something that took a lot of time and hard work but I was able to make it happen and take good care of our younger soldiers.

What do you want potential ROTC Cadets to know (about the Army or about being a soldier/officer)?Leadership is necessary to for the soldier and officer because they are going to be the ones that the soldiers look up to and hope that they are going to take good care of them and their   families. I hope that they will be a good listener and have the ablity to make the best decision possible in a time when it is needed because they will be asked 'What we do now Platoon Leader?'
