About The Nanook Battalion

The ROTC program at UAF is one of the oldest in the country, producing officers for the US Army since 1927. Many of our officers have gone on to senior leadership positions in the military, civilian business and government. We have produced congressmen, state legislators, judges and corporate executives, all of whom drew on their Army leadership training to become successes in the civilian world. In fact, UAF's previous Chancellor was commissioned through the Army ROTC program.

The Mascot for the University of Alaska Fairbanks is the Nanook, an Inupiat Eskimo word for the polar bear. Nanook means King of the North. Named after our fearsome mascot, UAF's ROTC Unit is the Nanook Battalion.

The units' crest for the Nanook Battalion is a polar bear, and the yellow and blue UAF colors are emblazoned behind the Nanook. The Nanook Battalion's unit motto is on the crest. 'Ad Summum' is Latin for "To the Summit!"

Army Strong is the new promotional tag line of the U.S. Army.

ROTC AT UAF

Those interested in being a part of ROTC should enroll in the MS I or MS II courses offered. There is no military obligation involved in taking these courses and we strongly invite all interested students to give ROTC a try with no strings attached.

For those students who have obtained Junior standing but have no prior military training, a Leader's Training Course consisting of five weeks at Fort Knox, Kentucky, substitutes the MS I and the MS II courses.

The ROTC curriculum at UAF is designed to provide cadets with the leadership and managerial skills necessary for either the business or military world. ROTC also incorporates a vigorous physical training program that provides the cadet the opportunity to grow physically as well as mentally.

For the cadet who enjoys additional challenges, the Nanook Battalion has additional clubs, is involved in intramural sports, has a rifle and color guard team and is involved in Ranger Challenge.

So if you are looking for something extra to add to your college career, look us up, we'll make the difference you are looking for.
