Information Sessions
All applicants are required to attend an info session on the RA position.  These sessions will last approximately 30 minutes.  Either a Resident Director or Assistant Resident Director along with current Resident Assistants will be hosting these information sessions.  The schedule for interest sessions is listed below:

2/1/09   Hess Recreation Center 1:00
2/2/09   Wood Center 1:00 pm in rooms E & F
2/2/09   Wood Center 2:00 in rooms E & F
2/3/09   Hess Recreation Center 10:00pm
2/4/09   Lola Tilly Commons at 1:00pm
2/5/09   Wood Center 8:00pm in rooms E & F

These information sessions will provide you not only with more information about the jobs and what we are seeking in candidates, but will also give you the opportunity to speak with current RAs about the positions they hold.  Attendance at one information session is required to submit an application.

*Lola Tilly Commons is UAF’s main dining facility.  The session will be held in the dining hall during meal time and candidates can eat lunch during the session.  Attendance to the session will require attendees to use their meal plan or buy a meal.  Entrance to the commons dining hall is not allowed unless you purchase a meal.

RA Application
This application consists of basic contact information, work and/or volunteer history, leadership experience on campus, and essay responses.    The application is due to the Department of Residence Life on February 16, 2009 by 5:00pm.

References
Applicants are required to submit three reference forms. These references should be able to speak knowledgeably about your work, volunteer, leadership, and/or academic experiences.  The reference forms are due to the Department of Residence Life on February, 16, 2009.  These forms are attached to the RA Application.

Individual Interview
Each candidate must sign up for an individual interview.  These interviews last approximately 45 minutes.  These are usually conducted by a team made up of one professional/paraprofessional Residence Life staff member and 3-5 Resident Assistants

Creative Expression
This year, the Office of Residence Life is asking candidates for Student Staff positions to bring an example of a creative expression to their individual interview.  This is designed to help us get to know you and how you would approach programming with your residents.  Your creation will not be judged on artistic merit but on how creatively you approached the project and how thoughtfully you considered the needs and interests of your potential residents.

The creation should address the programming value of a Diverse Community.  The submission is limited to a 8.5 x 11 paper only.  Other sizes or multiple pages will not be accepted.

  • A sketch/layout of a bulletin board you would create.
  • A drawing of or production of some other passive program.
  • An advertisement for an active program.

Your creative expression may include information and images from other sources, but the creation, design, and concept should be entirely your own.
We encourage you to have fun with this and show us your inventive side.  Again, please bring your creative expression to your individual interview.

Group Process
The date of the group process is determined by the number of qualified candidates.   Conducted in a one hour session, the group process places you in interactions with approximately 5-10 other applicants.  These processes are not traditional interview-style, but are rather a chance for our staff to observe your group skills, leadership, and problem-solving interactions.

Placement Preferences
During the process, we will ask you for your preferences about where you would like to be placed if you are hired.  This and other questions are located on the RA Application.  We cannot guarantee that accepted applicants will receive a placement they preferred.

The Department of Residence Life selects its Resident Assistants from those applicants who meet the special needs of the residence life program. We are looking for individuals who exhibit strong leadership potential and are sensitive to the needs of our diverse student population.
