Registration availability and exceptions

Web registration is available every day through the last day of late registration. Web registration closes at 6 p.m. on the last day of late registration.

If you are eligible for registration, you may use the web to register for your courses, except for:

  • Special permission courses
  • Individual study courses
  • More than 18 undergraduate credits
  • Courses that appear to conflict in time. These courses require instructor approval and will be made available for you to add to your schedule by the Registrar's Office after you register for your other courses.
  • Registration hold. If you have a registration hold, you may not register until the hold is removed by the initiating office. Registration holds and initiating offices may include:
    • Unpaid tuition and fees/outstanding balances on your student account (i.e., parking fines, course fees). See the Business Office, or call 474-7384.
    • Judicial/disciplinary holds. See Student and Enrollment Services, or call 474-7317.
    • Other registration holds. See the Registrar's Office, or call 474-6300.
      Since this is a statewide system, a hold at one unit of the University of Alaska will affect your registration at all UA units.
  • One section per class: You can't register and/or wait list yourself for different sections of the same class. If you do, you'll be dropped from all but one section, and that may not be the one you prefer.See "Wait Listing".

Plan your schedule

  1. Find the course(s) you want to register for using the class schedule. Plan your schedule using the class schedule worksheet.
  2. Fill out the registration worksheet for each of your desired courses and include:
    • the five-digit Course Reference Number (CRN)
    • course ID (department, number and section)

The course ID is for your reference only. You will enter only the Course Reference Number on the web registration system.

Registration form information

Please review the information printed on your registration form and on UAOnline. Make corrections in the spaces provided, and inform the Registrar's Office of any changes or incorrect information. The following will help you review your form:

  • Name: This is how your name appears on your official records. If your name is listed incorrectly, please inform the Registrar's Office.
  • Mailing address and phone: It is important that we have your correct local mailing address, e-mail address and phone number. We use this information if we need to contact you during the semester. Be sure to keep your mailing and e-mail addresses updated by making changes at http://uaonline.alaska.edu. To forward your UAF assigned e-mail address, follow the directions at www.uaf.edu/oit/email/usermin.xml.
  • Permanent address and phone: Please make sure this address and phone number are correct.
  • College, degree, major: In order to change these codes, you must complete a change of major form.
  • Level: Indicates your status (graduate, undergraduate, non-degree, etc.).
  • Residency status: Check your residency status prior to paying your tuition and fees. Submit an "Application for Resident Tuition" to the Admissions Office if you need to change your residency status. These applications with supporting documentation are due prior to the published first day of instruction.
  • Advisor name: Your advisor according to Registrar's Office records.

Information release

The university may release certain directory information to the public on a routine basis unless a student requests, in writing, that the university not release it. Forms to request that directory information not be released are available in the Registrar's Office. No directory information will be released until the last day of late registration. Any request to withhold directory information will continue until a student provides permission, in writing, for the university to release such. After that, information will be released when appropriate. Students withholding directory information will not appear in the published university chancellor's and dean's lists.

The following is considered directory information:

  • name;
  • e-mail addresses;
  • home city, state;
  • weight and height of students on athletic teams;
  • dates of attendance at UAF;
  • program/major field(s) of study;
  • degrees and certificates received, including dates;
  • participation in officially recognized university activities; and
  • academic and co-curricular honors, awards and scholarships, including dates received.

More about directory information.

Registration options

Priority

Registration priority is based on class standing for continuing students in degree or certificate programs. Within class standing, registration is first-come, first-served. Graduate students, seniors and juniors have the highest priority, followed by sophomores, freshmen, and new and returning degree-seeking students and non-degree-seeking students. Your class standing appears on your registration form.

Wait listing

What wait listing means
When a class is full, it is listed as "closed." Some courses offer a wait list option. If you want to be wait listed for a closed class, select "wait list" from the drop down menu on the Registration screen at UAOnline and click Submit Changes. If you are registering in person, the registration clerk can put you on wait lists for any closed classes.

Restrictions on wait listing
You will not remain on or have access to the wait list for a class if:

  • you are already enrolled or wait listed in another section of the same class,
  • the wait listed class conflicts with another class in which you are enrolled or wait listed,
  • the wait listed class would exceed your maximum allowed credits, or
  • you have holds on your account.

After you are wait listed
You may complete registration and even pay tuition and fees with a wait listed class. However, you aren't charged for a wait listed course, and it doesn't count toward determining your status as a full-time or part-time student.

Your position on the wait list
Use the web to check your status on a wait list. Follow the instructions to list your courses. You will be advised of your status in each course (either enrolled or wait listed). If you no longer want to be wait listed for a class, you can drop from the wait list by following the instructions for dropping a course.

Check your status using the web, in person, or by calling the Registrar's Office (474-6300) or the Tanana Valley Campus Center (455-2800). If you are outside the Fairbanks area, the toll-free number is 1-877-474-6046.

Start attending classes on the first day
Attend the first day of class for any classes for which you have been wait listed. Let the instructor know you are on the wait list and ask if any additional students will be allowed to enroll in the class. If you are given permission to enroll in the class, you must get a signed special permission form from the instructor and take the form to the Registrar's Office.

If space becomes available in a class in which you have been wait listed and your name is at the top of the wait list, you will be moved into the class, unless:

  • you have holds on your account,
  • the time conflicts with another class,
  • you are already enrolled in another section of the class, or
  • adding the class would exceed your maximum allowed credits.

It is your responsibility to check your status in wait listed courses through the first day of instruction. If you no longer want to be wait listed for a course, contact the Registrar's Office immediately so you will not be placed in -- and charged tuition and fees for -- a course you do not want.

Paying for wait listed courses
Tuition and fees are calculated only for the credits in which you are officially enrolled and do not include the wait listed classes. Click here for more information about the effect of wait listed classes on tuition, fees, and financial aid.

Time limits on wait listing
Wait lists are updated by the Registrar's Office until the first day of instruction for all courses. If by that time you are not enrolled in a course for which you are wait listed, you must obtain special permission from the instructor of the course. If it appears you will not be able to enroll in a course for which you are wait listed, you should select and enroll in a replacement class by the last day of late registration.

Individual study

To register for an individual study course, get an individual study approval form from the Registrar's Office, or download it from the web at web at www.uaf.edu/reg/forms/individual.pdf. Have it signed by your instructor and department head from the department in which the course is being taught, and turn it in with your registration or add/drop form. Individual study course numbers end in -97. The course section number for an individual study course will be assigned by the Registrar's Office after you register for your other classes.

Permission-only classes

To register for a class with a "by permission" restriction, obtain a signed permission form from the instructor or department in which the course is offered and turn it in with your completed registration materials. If it is submitted prior to in-person registration, the appropriate courses will be made available for you to add to your schedule via UAOnline.

Auditing a class

Students who want to enroll in one or more courses for informational purposes may only register as an auditor if space is available and auditing is permitted in the class. You pay the standard credit fees for the course, but the credits are not included in the computation of study load for full-time/part-time determination or for overload status. If you want to audit a course for which you are already registered for credit, you must make the change by the end of the second full week of instruction and follow the drop/add process for changes to and from audit status in a course. Changing from credit to audit after this date requires the approval of the instructor of the course as well as your advisor. The deadline for late changes from credit to audit is the same as for student-initiated withdrawals.

Credit/no credit option

The credit/no credit option enables you to enroll in courses without affecting your overall GPA. One elective course per semester can be taken under this option. You must apply for the option by the third Friday after the first day of instruction (click here for specific information). Credit/no credit option forms are available at the Registrar's Office and may be turned in at that office.

Overloads

If you register for more than 18 undergraduate credits, you must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and written overload approval from your advisor.
