Withdrawing from courses

Withdrawing after the deadline

After the last day for student-initiated withdrawals (the ninth Friday after the first day of instruction), late withdrawals are allowed for exceptional cases only. Acceptable reasons might include employment change, a documented medical condition or other non-academic reason such as disciplinary sanction. Escaping a bad grade is not an acceptable reason for seeking a withdrawal. Late student-initiated withdrawals should be submitted within 30 class days after the beginning of the next regular semester.

Late withdrawal from a class if not your only class

  1. Complete a late withdrawal form (available from the Registrar's Office or download from the web at www.uaf.edu/reg/forms/late_wd.pdf) and have your instructor, the course department head and your advisor sign it.
  2. Take the form to the dean of the college or school in which the course is offered. Be prepared with documentation explaining your withdrawal.
  3. If the dean approves, turn in the form to the Registrar's Office or Tanana Valley Campus Center.

Late withdrawal from all classes

  1. Obtain a total withdrawal form from the Registrar's Office or Tanana Valley Campus Center.
  2. Complete the form and have your advisor sign it if you are a degree student.
  3. See the dean of the college or school in which your major is located or the assistant provost of general studies if you are a pre-major or a general studies student. Be prepared with documentation explaining your withdrawal.
  4. If approved, turn in the form to the Registrar's Office or the Tanana Valley Campus Center.

Faculty-initiated withdrawals

University policy requires a grade of "C" or better in all prerequisite courses. If you don't meet prerequisites for a course or if you haven't participated substantially in the course, the instructor has the right to withdraw you from the class. The deadline for faculty-initiated withdrawals is Oct. 31, 2008. If you are withdrawn from a course, you will be notified.

Changing majors

Your major is printed on your registration form and is considered official unless you change it. A completed change of major form must be turned in during the registration period, and will take effect the following semester. Forms can be obtained online at www.uaf.edu/reg/ or at the Registrar's Office.

NOTE:

  • Students admitted for a semester that has not begun are not eligible to use the change of major form. Please contact Admissions.
  • Pre-major students do not need to submit a change of major form to be moved into regular major status. This will occur automatically once you meet major requirements. See pre-major information in the university catalog.
