New Student Orientation
After the student is accepted into the program, s/he will receive a packet of materials about RAP, including a list of readings about resilience and sustainability. We hold a two-day orientation with new students of the Resilience and Adaptation Program immediately before the start of classes. The goals of this orientation program are:
- to develop a sense of community and identity among students and RAP faculty;
- to identify areas of common interest among students of the new cohort;
- to convey to students the importance, challenges, and opportunities of interdisciplinary research;
- to introduce students to the philosophical and ethical issues inherent to interdisciplinary and cross-cultural communication;
- to begin discussing key issues related to resilience and adaptation in Alaska and the globe.
ALL RAP Seminar Series
Every other week a Resilience and Adaptation Program student, faculty, or visiting scholar presents a seminar based on his or her research, offering an opportunity for problem-solving of some sustainability issue. These seminars are built into existing departmental seminar series so students have opportunities to meet and interact with faculty and students from a wide range of disciplines.

Annual RAP Retreat
Each fall, students organize a retreat of faculty and students to discuss key topics, address goals of the year, and share ideas of sustainability science. The retreat is an exchange of ideas, a chance to catch up with each other on research and other activities, and plan activities for the acadmic year.
Visiting Scholar Program
Two to three times each semester we invite a visiting scholar to present a seminar on her/his research and to participate in the core graduate courses and the weekly graduate seminar.
Scholars are chosen based on their accomplishments in interdisciplinary research and their relevance to the theme of the semester.
The visiting scholar program draws on the nationally dispersed expertise in interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability. Past visitors have included Steve Carpenter (UWI), Marco Janson (ASU), Steve Langdon (UAA), Fikret Berkes (Umanatoba), and many others.
