Meet the 1998 RAHI Staff !

AliceAluskak, known asCucuaqto her extendedfamily that consists of brothers,sisters, aunts, uncles, grandmotherand her mother,is a tutor/counselor at RAHI for the second time and loves it.She was born in Dillingham, Alaska on November 17, 1976but was

raised in Napakiak, Alaska by her mother with the help of her grandmother.At the age of 18, Alice graduated from the Mt. Edgecumbe High School which is in Sitka, Alaska.She says she hated school until she came to the University of Alaska Fairbanks.For four years,Alice has beentaking classesfromUAFandsheismajoring in history and minoring in anthropology.In the four years she has spent inFairbanks she misses suluunaq (salted fish) and deptuq (stinkheads)and the smell of fish camp the most.After graduating she hopes to attend graduate school in a state along the west coast.

This isMargaretBaker'sthird year teaching reading forRAHI. She is known for here excellent success rate in reading with students in the reading-lab. She says, "It is exciting to see the students' confidenceincreasealongwith improvedreadingand writing skills." Herfavorite RAHI memory?The bike ride to Twin Bears. Margaret has a Master's degree in English litera- ture, and she graduated last month with a Master's of Fine Arts in poetry.In August, she leaves to spend a year studying in Concepcion, Chile.While she spends time in the Southern Hemisphere, herhope is to finish a bookof translations of the poems of Gabriela Mistral.

been teaching at UAF for four years and have been
absolutely enjoying learning with and from others. I
recentlycompletedmy MBA with an emphasis in man-
agement.I've enjoyedworkingwith the RAHI students
and lookforward to workingwith some of them in the
future. I'm a firm believer in the Rural Development
degree program. Our graduates are definitely on the
cutting edge of development and issues in their com-
munitiesand we'realways lookingforwardtoheighten
the awareness and the successes of our program. I'm
married to a wonderful man from the community of
Rampart. Wewill be celebrating 15 years this Septem-
ber. We have two children, Stewart, Jr. 14, and Alice, 8 fishing and spending time with my children. My motto
