ABUS 151 Village-Based Entrepreneurship
![]() |
The ABUS 151 Village-Based Entrepreneurship Class is a new addition to RAHI. This class is developing their own business called Enthymeme Solutions, which will incorporate educational material into every product they market.
For 15 years, Professor George Guthridge has been thinking of a business corporation that would be created and ran by RAHI students. Finally, in the beginning of summer 2007, within a matter of three weeks, the dream was fulfilled when George and Denise Wartes (RAHI program director) were able to fund a class designed especially for starting a business. The new corporation is called Higher Thinking Solutions.
Instructor
This class is taught by George Guthridge, a current co-owner of three businesses, one in the United States and two in Thailand who is very accustomed to the business/marketing world.

The original idea of a business where RAHI students designed, ran, and decided what types of products to be marketed was how this newly formed class began. Added to RAHI this year, the ABUS class will continue to add members of the corporation with each passing year. Who ever helps run the business and takes the class will walk out of RAHI with a college credit and a certificate of ownership of a part of Enthymeme Solutions.
The class, which on normal conditions, meets on Saturday mornings at The Cookie Jar Restaurant for breakfast. While there, they are involved in anticipating and resolving problems new businesses face everyday. Each "class" or "homework" assignment has a much greater consequence of a business flop than a letter grade in regular graded courses. The goal of the ABUS class is to succeed in producing a thriving and profitable business created by, governed by, and for RAHI students.
Over the last week, each of the students attending the classes were assigned the job of writing essays for the Alaska Marketplace Business Idea contest. This contest would provide a large amount of needed funding for the growth and expanse of the business.

Students
Each of the six students attending classes at University of Alaska, Fairbanks and three other individuals involved with this project have a specially assigned job to fulfill.
