Dr. George Charles


Alaska Native Studies Professor

 

Dr. George Charles is from Nelson Island, Pungugtali (A Place That Has a Little Hill) and has been teaching Alaska Native Education at the University of Alaksa Fairbanks since 1999. Jim Kowalsky, the director of RAHI, was a guest speaker for his class a few times and had asked Dr. Charles to teach a specialty class for RAHI students. Dr. Charles recieved a BA from Alaska Pacific University in 1991, a MA from Universtiy of California Santa Barbara in 1998, and an AA in Electronics Technology from UAF in 1971. He then recieved a Ph.D from the University of California Santa Barbara in this last year. Dr. Charles enjoys travelling, carving Yupiaq masks, playing the giutar, clarinet, tenor saxaphone, and spending time with his grandchildren. He plans to spend more time with his own elders to learn Yupiaq dancing and singing.
