Whenever the Twin Bears weekend draws to a close, the end of RAHI is never far behind.

The 19th RAHI Has Come and Is (Almost) Gone -

Fifty-two students will walk across that stage, shake a few hands, grasp their certificate and join their fellow students in a rousing cheer throwing hats in the air as almost two decades of RAHI rush to a breathtaking finish on Friday, July 6th (see invitation elsewhere in this issue).

This summer students were selected from 81 applicants to attend RAHI from southeast to near the end of the Aleutian Island chain to the Arctic coast to the Yukon Flats. They were joined in McIntosh Hall by six Athabaskan students who studied their language for three weeks at the Athabaskan Language Development Institute (ALDI) sponsored by UAF's Alaska Native Language Center, all functioning as one 58 student family. It was an exciting time for the RAHI dorm.

One of the most special features of 2001 is RAHI's first-ever second generation RAHIer, Lucy Gavin, of Buckland. Lucy's dad, Eddie, attended in RAHI '83, while Lisa, her mom, participated in '87. Both Eddie and Lisa are also UAF graduates.

RAHI courses included the usual (but unusual) writing emphasis taught by Professor George Guthridge, chemistry by Tammy Thompson, Computer Science with Jenn Peterson, Introduction to Alaska Native Studies by Dr. George Charles, and that age-old Precalculus with RAHI's 17-year senior faculty Greg Owen's ('83 to present with two years absence). Wendy Klinker repeated her 1998 performance as swimming instructor, and Janet Amuktoolik, '95 Golovin/Toksook Bay, took her turn at instructing the Alaska Native Dance course. Howard Maxwell again taught Computer Information and Office Systems course. "Big Jim" Kowalsky has seen his 16th RAHI and Denise Wartes in her 13th year as assistant have seen RAHI come and go in a whirlwind of budgets, courses, personnel, parents too, and the usual endless details of keeping the program on track during its busiest time of the year.

Computers at UAF - - -

For those computer-minded, we note that UAF's Arctic Region Supercomputing Center has recently installed a new IBM supercomputer and upgraded its existing units. The new system, nick-named Icehawk, has 200 processors, 92 gigabytes of memory and terabyte of disk space. Icehawk is now the fastest computer at ARSC and doubles the center's computational capacity. The upgrade is part of a three-phase expansion being completed this summer. For more information visit http://www.arsc.edu.

UAF Cornerstone 5/5/01

Kim Antoghame, '89 Gambell, called. Her father got the first bowhead whale in years of no luck for the Gambell crew. Son Cameron, 8 1/2, finished the second grade. Kim recently went to work for Kawerak as a youth coordinator working in Gambell. She is very pleased at the new position and will also get educational assistance through Kawerak as part of the arrangement of employment.

Trisha Gray, '00 White Mountain, emails she finished her freshman year at UAA with a biology major aiming at a medical career. Trisha hopes to enroll next term at the University of Hawaii in Hilo, starting in August to which she looks forward. Good luck, good Hawaii Trisha! <trisha_gray@yahoo.com>.

Dawn Ruby Robinson, '91 Seward, now Dawn Robinson, married to Pat last July, who teaches at Ipalook Elementary School in Barrow. She had planned to earn her AA degree at Ilisagvik College in Barrow this past spring and also works at the college. Congratulations! Best wishes! <drobinson@co.north_slope.ak.us>

Saucy Romey, '97 Metlakatla, emails she's enrolled at North Seattle Community College, jubilant over approval of financial aid "It's not Cornell University but my entire tuition is paid for" with a high grade point finish first quarter with courses like pre-calculus and chemistry. "I'm having the time of my life learning more than I ever dreamed I was born to go to school ." She's also in the Army National Guard, a lot, all at once with her 18 credits and 30 hours a week part time employment. Saucy!! We recall her best for those strong active math genes, and pedaling back from Twin Bears, refusing to shift the bike gears and therefore walking up all the hills. <sauncha@msn.com>

Dennis Jimmie, '88 Kwigillingok, emails this update. With "three beautiful boys Sean, Linden, and Casey" and "wonder wife Kendra A Phillip" he works for the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation in Bethel as Telephone/Network Assistant and enjoying life on the Y-K Delta. Dennis plans to finish what he started, his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering when he gets "the guts and money" and is looking for distance delivery courses he can take in Bethel on the job towards his degree requirements. Great to hear from you Dennis. <Dennis_W_Jimmie@ykhc.org> or <dwjimmie@hotmail.com>

Bethel Superior Court Judge Curda swears in Darlene Johnson, '88 Emmonak, as Emmonak Court Magistrate this past August.

Darlene Johnson, '88 Emmonak, has been appointed as the new magistrate in the Emmonak Court. She was sworn in at the Superior Court in Bethel on August 28, 2000. Besides serving as magistrate, Darlene, with her husband, is raising three children, Cyprian, Brandon, and Nathan, and is closing in on the BA. "I am a late bloomer. I think I have enough things going on to keep me busy for a while. Eventually I'll get there." Congratulations, Darlene, on your appointment to the court! Darlene Johnson, PO Box 251, Emmonak, AK 99581.

Ada Chapman, '88 Healy Lake/Tok, announces child number 4, Amber born 13 December 2000. Congratulations. Ada, who earned an accounting degree at UAF in '95, works for Alyeska Pipeline Service Company in Fairbanks. <chapmana@gci.net>

Grete Lisbeth Bergman, '92 & '93 Fort Yukon, corrects her email address which the RAHI Review published incorrectly. Sorry for the mistake. It is <gretelynn@yahoo.com>.

Violet Sensmeier, '97 Yakutat, Tlingit Tribe's Youth Advocate, part of a statewide network of Youth Advocates that includes several RAHI alumni, reports that her daughter Amiak is 4 1/2+ months. Violet is investigating the offer at the University of Alaska Southeast to provide a full scholarship to qualified Alaska Natives who wish to become teachers. And, will move her family there to continue her degree work if it pans out. Violet promised to send baby pictures of RAHI and RSS, but we've seen nothing yet (hint, hint). Sue McHenry wins

Bulloch Prize of Excellence

Long, long time UAF Rural Student Services (RSS) Advisor, early-on RAHI instructor, and familiar face to hundreds, maybe more, students who have enrolled at UAF over her 29 years at UAF. She has a real track record of great service to students, winning other recognition too, such as the UA "Make Students Count" in May 2001, the Associated Students of UAF's "Outstanding Faculty/Staff" award in 1994, and the UAF "Outstanding Advisor" award in 1993 and 1996. She won the Denali Award from the Alaska Federation of Natives in 1997 for non-Native Alaskan who has been especially helpful to Native people. To all those students she served, including RAHIers, she is known simply as "Sue." Everyone around UAF and wherever else its alumni are found knows who is Sue. This awesome lady truly deserves the recognition. She received $15,000 that goes with this award which is one of the most generous of its kind within the entire university system. There could be no one more deserving. Well done Congratulations Sue! <fnsim@uaf.edu>

RAHI Pulls Up Its Stakes

The Rural Alaska Honors Institute has a new home! Still UAF, yes, but the well-known and popular college preparatory program will officially transfer to a new part of the university. RAHI leaves its 19 year home in the UAF's College of Liberal Arts and moves over into the UAF College of Rural Alaska, known as CRA.

"I am looking forward to the association with CRA," says program director Jim Kowalsky. He looks for closer and more direct association and contact with the rural constituencies of the university. Whereas students in particular will likely not notice the change, Mr. Kowalsky looks forward to more help with fundraising, student recruitment and student follow-up. "This should be a really productive change and I look forward to it," he says.
