Academic Outcomes Assessment Plan
Academic Year 2000-2001

MISSION: We shall provide quality undergraduate education responsive to the needs of individual students and the diverse population of Alaska.

GOAL: To assure that our graduates are adequately prepared to succeed in the job market in their chosen accounting field or a closely related field.

INTENDED OUTCOMES/OBJECTIVES

(what, when, who)

(1) Students will display effective written communication skills for use in the world of business.

ENTRY LEVEL ASSESSMENT:

(a) SAT/ACT verbal scores.

(b) Grade in ENG 111X

ENTRY LEVEL:

AIS department secretary prepares synopsis of scores and grades upon student’s declaration of major or upon student’s filing for graduation.

 

EXIT LEVEL ASSESSMENT:

Portfolio of five student research papers for Acct. 452 (the writing intensive course). Test essay questions in Acct. 414 (a required course).

EXIT LEVEL:

Sample of research papers and essay question examined by the AIS Dept. Assessment Committee during the senior year.

(2) Students will display effective oral communication skills for use in the world of business.

ENTRY LEVEL ASSESSMENT:

Oral presentation grades based on performance in either COM. 131X or 141X.

ENTRY LEVEL:

Department secretary determines grade upon student’s declaration of major or upon student’s filing for graduation.

 

EXIT LEVEL ASSESSMENT:

Oral presentation in upper division course in the student’s option within the BBA program.

EXIT LEVEL:

Sample of grades earned in oral intensive courses.

(3) Students will have the ability to analyze conceptual, unstructured problems in at least three of the functional areas of business.

ENTRY LEVEL ASSESSMENT:

None

ENTRY LEVEL:

(4) Students will have the ability to analyze conceptual, unstructured problems.

EXIT LEVEL ASSESSMENT:

Portfolio of three case study write-ups on various topics for BA 462.

EXIT LEVEL:

Sample of portfolios examined by SOM Instructional Resource, Advising and Assessment Committee at student’s graduation. Pass rate on CPA examination.

(5) Students will develop technical accounting and business knowledge and skills.

ENTRY LEVEL ASSESSMENT:

Assumed to have few skills

(a) Student satisfaction with skills obtained

(b) Employers satisfaction with skills obtained.

ENTRY LEVEL:

None

(a) Exit interviews by AIS Department Head at end of Spring Semester using a standardized interview instrument Pass rate on CPA examination.

(b) Placement rate of graduates. Pass rate on CPA examination. AIS Dept. Advisory Board gives feedback on employer satisfaction with AIS graduates.

 

 

ASSESSMENT OF ALUMNI:

(a) Current position title, supervisory status, and salary of alumni.

(b) Performance of AIS Dept. students and alumni on professional examinations.

ALUMNI:

(a) Alumni survey overseen every five years by SOM Alumni Committee, results reported to SOM Executive Committee

(b)Obtain pass rate of students and alumni on professional examinations (CPA, CMA, CIA).
