JoyPROPOSAL FOR A GLOBAL STUDIES MINOR in CLA
Joy Morrison
College of Liberal Arts
October 31, 2000This proposal is for the creation of a new minor within the College. We have very little international focus, and I hope that this proposal will change the current situation. There is a new capstone class called Introduction to International Relations being introduced in the Political Science Department, and this minor will build on it.
A Global Studies (or International Studies) minor would consist of several required classes, some of which currently exist and others that would be designed. It is my hope to have this minor designed and approved before the Fall of 2001.
The cost of such a minor would be an initial investment of $25K; possibly an annual investment of $15,000
The process, and budget breaks down as follows:
Design of new minor degree and design of new class "Introduction to Global Studies", spring 01 two course buyout - Morrison $10,000 (for the Journalism Dept)
Coordinator of new minor program: annual two course buyout from whatever Dept this person comes. $10K
Teaching of Introduction to Global Studies class each Fall: $4-5K buyout
Classes envisioned in this new minor: 18 creditsRequirements: 9 credits
GS 101 Introduction to Global Studies
ECON/PS 100X Political Economy (core course so not counted in minor)
PSXXX Introduction to International Relations (Anger, Erikson, Culligan-Taylor)
GEOG 101 Introductory GeographyElectives: 9 credits
ENG200X World Literature (core course so not counted in minor)
JB240 International Communications
GEOG203 World Economic Geography
GEOG304 Advanced Economic Geography
GEOG 305 (Europe, or 306 (Russia) or 311 (Asia) or 315 (Africa)
COMM330 Intercultural Communication
PS321 International Politics
PS322 International Law and Organization
PS323 International Political Economy
RD375 Women in Development
SPAN/FREN/GER431 Studies in the Culture of the Span/Fren/Ger Speaking World
PS476 Political Development in Latin America and the Caribbean
PS468 Government and Politics of Russia
BA460 International Business
ECON463 International Economics----------------------------------
If this degree eventually goes to degree status, it will have two tracks. One will be a language focus, the other will not. In both cases there will be a semester abroad requirement of at least 6 credits arranged and coordinated through International Programs.
Budget for new degree requires at least one tenure-track faculty line $50-60K plus benefits -$80K; support staff (could be shared with another existing dept); computer, telephone, and office supplies - $10K; a travel budget for an alternate year spring break trip such as Alex Fitts is leading next semester - $5K; and misc costs $5K. Total annual costs $100K. Could be less for a junior faculty position
