1. The Art of Discussion Leading: a class with Chris Christensen. Professor Roland "Chris" Christensen, who has taught for nearly 50 years at the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, initiates a group of apprentice teachers into the challenges of discussion leading. Under his guidance, the group analyzes a teaching case. Includes classroom scenes, reflections on teaching by Professor Christensen, and interviews with participants. 30 mins. VH6614.

2. How To Speak: Lecture Tips from Patrick Winston. Professor Winston of MIT offers advice on how to present an effective talk. Originally designed for graduate students preparing to give their first job seminar, his entertaining lecture is also aimed at faculty members and teaching assistants who will teach through lecturing. 45 mins. VH6612.

3. Thinking Together: Collaborative Learning in Science. Three models of collaborative learning -- an introductory physics lecture, a lesson in celestial navigation, and a section in physical chemistry -- filmed in Harvard classrooms. In each class, students discuss problems and devise solutions with the help of their instructors and peers. Includes interviews and classroom scenes. 18 mins. VH6611.

4. What Students Want: Teaching from a Student's Perspective. Teachers make assumptions about what motivates, excites, and frustrates their students. But how do students themselves view teaching? What do they find exciting and frustrating in the classroom? To help answer these questions Harvard interviewed undergraduates and presents their reflections on what facilitates learning, definitions of good and bad teachers, and the nature of the student-teacher partnership. 24 mins. VH6615.

5. The Act of Teaching: Part I. In this video, Nancy Houfek, head of Voice and Speech in the Theater Department at Harvard directs a workshop intended to help teachers improve their presentation skills. Throughout the workshop, Houfek stresses communicating with the whole self in order to "clarify, illuminate, and inspire" an audience. 42 mins. VH6613.

6. The Act of Teaching: Part II. This video leads teachers through exercises designed to prepare them for the physical challenges of the classroom. The video stresses the importance of warming up your body and voice so that you can be fully present to your audience as you begin to teach. 15 mins. VH6613.

OTHER VIDEOTAPES:

23. "Wealth, Innovation and Diversity: Putting our Differences to work in the 21st Century" by Joel Barker. Hosted by best-selling author and futurist Joel Barker this video contends that your organization will experience long-lasting success only when you reap the benefits of diversity by collaborating with individuals and enterprises that are different from yourself. Lessons are taught against such backdrops as Machu Picchu's ruins, a farm in Ireland, skyscrapers in Singaporeand the forests, maintains and plains of America. Drawing from history, science and innovations of organizations and nations, Barker introduces a new premise for thinking and understanding diversity and its role in our lives and world, bringing his powerful messages to a conclusion with a call-to-action for every organization and individual. (Supported with facilitator guide, workbook and cd-rom). 2002. 31 mins.

24. "8 Keys to a Better Worklife" with Dr. Marty Nemko. PBS 2001. 60 mins. Almost every working person would like to improve his or her work life. So in this unique pledge special, career counselor, best-selling author (Cool Careers for Dummies), syndicated columnist and public radio host Dr. Marty Nemko will address such universal concerns as office politics, stress control, how to negotiate a pay raise and how to search for a new job. He will do this by talking to and interacting with a diverse studio as well as going on location to office buildings and other work environments. The 8 keys are: Tailoring your job to your strenghts; Winning at office politics; Smart ways to stay current; Mastering time; Gaining control over stress; Getting more money; When you still haven't figured out what you are going to be when you grow up; Job searching for people who hate networking.

25. "Invisible Rules: men, women and teams". by Dr. Pat Heim. 34 mins. 1996. According to Dr. Heim, men and women grow up in different cultures, learning different lessons about what it means to be a leader and what it means to be a team player. In her thoughtful and lively presentation she sorts out some of these rules - Men and women have radically different ideas of wha it means to be a team player; Our meeting behaviors are different. For men, the meeting often doesn't happen in the meeting and women may not know this; Women often use disclaimers, hedges, and tag questions in their linguistic behavior which can backfire when talking to men; and Our non-verbal communication is different. For example, when women nod, it means, "I hear you," whilc men nod in agreement. These differences are not right or wrong but they can result in confusion and conflict. By making these invisable rules visable, Dr. Heim provides the basis for better understanding, communication and teamwork.

26. "Everyday Creativity" with Dewitt Jones. This is about looking at the ordinary and seeing the .. extraordinary. We are all faced with challenges -- at work and at home. How we view these challenges and devise their solutions can mean the difference between just getting by and being successful. Hosted by internationally known photojournalist Dewitt Jones, this teaches us that we all have the ability to be more creative. Using inspirational stories, memorable locations and Jones' vivid photography, it will empower you to apply his simple, yet powerful creativity techniques to all aspects of your life. (Comes with workbook). 20 mins.

27. "Leadership and the New Science" with Meg Wheatley. This film is based on her book of the same name. It explores a simpler way to manage complex organizations, and encourages organizations to become more flexible and adaptable. 25 mins.
