"What Students Want: teaching from a student's perspective"

Teachers often make assumptions about what motivates, excites or frustrates their students. But how do students themselves view teaching? What do they find exciting or frustrating in the classroom? How do they learn best, and what role do they think faculty can play in the process?

We will watch a 24-minute training video from Harvard's Bok Center for Teaching & Learning and then discuss.

3 Simple Ways to Implement Learner-Centered Teaching

Learner-centered teaching offers an intriguing educational approach for faculty because of its explicit focus on students and on learning processes.

However, some faculty members are hesitant to embrace learner-centered teaching because of the increased responsibility that students assume with this approach. Some faculty are reluctant to adopt this instructional model because they don’t know where to begin.

During this 20 minute program, you’ll learn:

•Three low-risk activities that provide you with a starting point in adopting the learner-centered teaching approach.
•Activities for students who tend to be more dependent than independent as learners.
•How to co-create a climate for learner-centered teaching in your classroom with a variety of motivational and creative learning activities.
•How and when to let students summarize to increase their learning.
