UA Board of Regents

The University of Alaska Board of Regents is an 11-member board, appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Alaska State Legislature. Members serve an 8-year term, with the exception of the Student Regent who is nominated from his/her campus and serves a 2-year term. The board was established through the Constitution of the State of Alaska and is responsible for University of Alaska policy and management through the university president.

The following Regents served UA during the 2001-02 academic year:

Elsa Froehlich Demeksa, Juneau (1997-2005), Vice Chair
Frances H. Rose, Anchorage (1999-2007), Secretary
Brian D. Rogers, Fairbanks (1999-2007), Treasurer
Joe Hardenbrook*, Fairbanks (2001-2003), Student Regent
Mark Begich*, Anchorage (2001-2009)
Michael J. Burns, Anchorage (1997-2005)
Marlene Johnson*, Juneau (2001-2009)
Kevin O. Meyers, Anchorage (2000-2008)
Joe J. Thomas, Fairbanks (1995-2003)
Joseph E. Usibelli, Jr., Healy (1999-2007)

* The 22nd Alaska State Legislature refused to vote on confirmation of these appointed UA Regents thus terminating their tenure immediately on May 16, 2002.
