Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program
Alaska Native Cultural Material
Print this program

Subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geology, Health/Medicine, Math, Physics

Summary:
The goal of the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP) is to help Native students succeed and excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics while maintaining cultural connections during college. ANSEP guides students to later become leaders in their professions. The program was started at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 1996 and is now part of the Pacific Alliance for indigenous students, which includes the University of Washington and the University of Hawaii in addition to UAF and UAA.

ANSEP holds weekly meetings designed to inform students of possible internships and scholarships, as well as to help students create academic partnerships. Students are expected to participate in tutor/study sessions that will help them get through challenging classes required for their major. These sessions include Math, Physics, Engineering, Chemistry and Biology.

In addition, through partnerships with businesses such as Siemens Corporation, British Petroleum and IBM, ANSEP offers its members summer internship opportunities so students can get first-hand experience in their field of study. Partner organizations also provide limited wages for ANSEP students providing tutoring services to other students during the academic school year.

Although ANSEP's target group is indigenous people, any student interested in science or math related fields is welcome to participate. Meetings are held every Thursday at 5:15 p.m. in the Brooks Gathering Room throughout the academic school year.
