Geographic Information Network of Alaska (GINA)
Print this program

Subjects: Geography, Remote Sensing

Summary:
The Geographic Information Network of Alaska (GINA) is an on-line database that stores near-real-time satellite images of Alaska and surrounding Polar Regions. GINA is the University of Alaska’s mechanism for organizing and sharing its diverse data and images collected from polar orbiting satellites with Alaskan, arctic and world communities.

GINA consists of a large database that stores images collected by satellites that orbit the Earth and record images of the Polar regions multiple times every day. Images can be viewed by date and time through the “SwathViewer” tool on the GINA Network. By accessing the SwathViewer database, users are able to select images pertaining to specific satellite receiving units (MODIS or AVHRR) and can view archived images dating back to 1993.

Satellite imagery provided by GINA is widely used by various state organizations such as the Bureau of Land Management, Alaska Fire Service, and the Alaska Volcano Observatory. Not only is GINA a valuable tool for scientists; it is a wonderful resource to use in the classroom. Teachers and community members can access satellite images on a daily basis. GINA images obtain daily information about the location of sea ice and weather storms off Alaska’s shoreline. Teachers can incorporate images into classroom lessons and discussions on topics such as geography, weather, sea ice, global climate change, and remote sensing.

GINA operates best with Safari search engine software. For more information, got to www.gina.alaska.edu or call 907-474-6663.
