Electronic Research Administration (eRA)Electronic Research Administration, or eRA for short, stands for several things. To simplify, it means an electronic system that is used to facilitate or ease preparation, routing, submission, tracking, and reporting of sponsored projects and related documents. It can be a system that is used for one, several, or all of those purposes. The federal government has moved to make all proposal submissions electronic, especially with their implementation of Grants.gov, which is intended to be a portal to submit proposals to all 26 grant-making federal agencies. The Federal Demonstration Partnership, or FDP, is tasked with several initiatives related to eRA. The FDP is "an association of federal agencies, academic research institutions with administrative, faculty and technical representation, and research policy organizations that work to streamline the administration of federally sponsored research. FDP members of all sectors cooperate in identifying, testing, and implementing new, more effective ways of managing the more than $15 Billion in federal research grants. The goal of improving the productivity of research without compromising its stewardship has benefits for the entire nation." eRA has another, more localized application, and that is at the internal/desktop level. There is software available to automate and make current research administration processes paperless for investigators, staff, and administrators.
