UAF Research Policies focus on the responsible
conduct of research and adherence to basic ethical principles.
Most are created to ensure awareness of rules, awareness of standards
of conduct, and compliance with state and/or federal government
laws and regulations. All are intended to establish a high professional
standard for our research activities.

Current Policies
Animal
Care & Use: This policy pertains to the care and use
of vertebrate animals used in research and teaching at UAF.
The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), UAF
Veterinary Services, and the Office of Research Integrity are
responsible for administering this policy. For more information
visit the IACUC website or contact the Office of Research Integrity.
Biosafety
in Research & Teaching:
This policy applies to all uses of recombinant DNA, artificial
gene transfer (genetically modified organisms), infectious agents and biologically derived toxins
by UAF personnel.
Use
of Controlled Substances in Research and Teaching: This
policy addresses the use
of controlled substances in activities
at UAF or by UAF personnel in the field. Drug Enforcement Agency
registrations are currently held by the Institute of Arctic
Biology, Institute of Marine Sciences and the UAF Attending
Veterinarian. Units or individuals wishing to obtain a DEA registration must work with the ORI. Click HERE for more information.
Export
Management: All UAF
programs, projects and activities involving the use of export
controlled information and/or materials are subject to this
policy. For more information about this policy or the associated
US export regulations contact the Sr. Research Compliance Officer.
Occupational
Health & Safety - UAF Animal Facilities: There are
unique health and safety risks associated with working in an
animal facility. This policy establishes a risk-based assessment
process and monitoring procedures for all individuals requiring
access to UAF owned animal facilities. Participation in this
program is mandatory. More information on the Occupational
Health & Safety Program is available on the IACUC website.
Protection
of Human Research Participants: All projects, programs
or activities involving the use of human subjects are covered
under this policy. UAF has opted to require the same level
of oversight for all human subjects research regardless of
funding source. For more information about this policy contact
the Office of Research Integrity or visit the Institutional Review Board (IRB) website.
Principal
Investigator Eligibility:
This policy sets forth guidance regarding who may serve as a
principal investigator on sponsored projects and research committee
(IACUC, IRB, etc.) submissions. This policy replaces the PI Policy
issued by Chancellor Lind (August 2001).
Take
Your Child to Work Day - Children on Campus Guidelines:
This policy/guideline was instituted to ensure the safety of
young visitors while at UAF. The majority of UAF facilities
are not designed for occupancy by children. Serious injuries
can and have occurred to children on university campuses. If
you have questions regarding these guidelines contact the Chancellor's
Office or UAF Environmental Health, Safety & Risk Management.

Excessive Compliance Costs: This memo from Vice Chancellor Sharpton informs research institutes and academic units that they will be held responsible for compliance costs in excess of normal expenditures included in the Office of Research Integrity's budget.
