Great Decisions 2013

HIS2             Session I: Sept. 12, 19, 26, Oct. 3

            Thursdays 10:15 am – 12:15 pm

            Each 4-week session stands alone; you may take either one or both.

Do you ever see foreign news reports and wonder what it’s all about? Global challenges have increasingly become domestic challenges with events in the remotest parts of the world affecting our lives in myriad ways. Get the information you need to figure out what’s happening and to be able to discuss it intelligently with others. This program was developed by the Foreign Policy Association. Read essential background information in the briefing book, then come to class for a video analysis of the topic by experts, followed by a group discussion. The Great Decisions 2013 Briefing Book is available from the OLLI office for $22. Read the relevant chapter before each class. Class members take turns leading the discussions.

A History of Alcatraz and the Cinema

HIS4             Session I: Sept. 13, 20, 27, Oct. 4

            Fridays 2:00 – 5:00 pm

Explore historical Alcatraz Island from early Spanish exploration, as a military fortress in the Civil War, a military prison, a federal penitentiary, a symbol of the American Indian Movement, and a national park. We’ll view two films closely connected with historical events at the island: The Birdman of Alcatraz and Escape from Alcatraz.

Instructor Stephen Heckman, retired Alaska State Trooper, former adjunct with Tanana Community College, and retired history teacher and vice principal of Monroe Catholic High School has an undergraduate degree from the University of Alaska.

Project Jukebox: Alaska’s History on the Web

HIS5             Session II: Oct. 15, 22, 29, Nov. 5

            Tuesdays 8:45 – 10:00 am

Learn about Alaska’s history from the people themselves through Project Jukebox, the digital branch of the Oral History Program at UAF. Explore Alaska’s Digital Archives as it presents innumerable historical photographs, albums, oral histories, moving images, maps documents and physical objects all held at museums and archives across the state. The goal is to learn about these fabulous resources and how to use them.   No computer experience necessary.

Instructor, Leslie McCartney, is the curator of Oral History at UAF.   As an anthropologist/oral historian, she has recorded the life stories of an array of people in projects in Alaska, Canada, England and Ireland.

Wars of the Twentieth Century

HIS6             Session II: Oct. 18, 25, Nov. 1, 8

            Fridays 12:15 – 1:30 pm

While this course will be about the military history of the American wars of the 20th Century, all those wars were global so the course will cover more than American history.

 I:             The Great War (WWI)

II:               World War II

III:               The Cold War and the Korean War

IV:               Vietnam and the Cold War

Instructor Paul S. Renschen, LTC RET USA, taught Military History at West Point and directed the ROTC Instructors' Course in Military History. After his retirement from the Army, he taught various courses for City College of Chicago, the University of Maryland and the University of Alaska.
