Working with Wool Fiber

ART1             Session I: Sept. 11, 18, 25, Oct. 2

            Wednesdays 2:00 – 3:15 pm

Explore the use of wool fiber, from the raw fleece to finished products. The course includes an introduction to spinning yarn, basic weaving, wet felting and needle felting. Each participant will produce a selection of yarns for use in a finished weaving project, a wet-felted project and a needle-felted project. Materials fee $30; pay instructor at the first class. Enrollment limited to 15.

Instructors: Susan Wilsrud, Farm Director at Calypso Farm and Ecology Center, loves wool and her flock of Shetland Sheep! She has been spinning and making wool items for over 10 years. Sonya Montenegro, Calypso Farm's first "Artist in Residence," is a very versatile artist who draws, paints, sews, carves and also loves working with wool.

American Art at the Smithsonian

ART2             Session I: Sept. 12, 19, 26, Oct. 3

            Thursdays 11:00 am – 12:30 pm

            Held at Butrovich 212B

Join presenters from the Smithsonian American Art Museum live in interactive, object-driven videoconferences. Explore images from the museum's permanent collection and discuss art that celebrates the aspirations, character and imagination of the American people throughout three centuries. Enrollment limited to 12.

Instructors are volunteer teleconference docents for the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Tips & Techniques in Watercolor

ART3             Session I: Sept. 12, 19, 26, Oct. 3

            Thursdays 1:30 – 4:30 pm

Learn some tips and techniques you may not have thought of previously to improve your painting and composition. We can also discuss previous paintings you are not happy with to use them as a learning experience. Materials fee $15; pay instructor at the first class. Enrollment limited to 20.

Instructor Sue Cole has taught arts and crafts classes for over 40 years in everything from knitting and crocheting to watercolor, oil, and acrylic painting, machine knitting, and bookbinding.

Birch Bark Baskets  

ART6             Add-on I: Oct. 8, 9, 10, 11

            Tuesday – Friday 1:45 – 4:45 pm

Learn the history of and how to make woven birch bark baskets in the Scandinavian/ Northern European style, as practiced for centuries. In this class we will make two small baskets and, as time permits, additional decorative ornaments utilizing birch bark. Be prepared to get your hands and clothes dirty as we prepare the bark and weave it into various shapes. Bring your own ruler, scissors, utility knife and pencils. The instructor will provide the birch bark and lots of ideas for your projects. Enrollment limited to 10.

Instructor Arvid Weflen is a UAF professor emeritus who taught aviation maintenance for 30+ years. He enjoys many varied interests including blacksmithing, traditional farming methods, restoring old buggies, genealogy, amateur radio, and solar energy. Assistant Yoko Collier was a professor of Japanese Linguistics in US and Canada. Being a basket case in basketry, she is naturally resourceful in teaching what not to do in weaving birch bark.

Zentangle “101”

ART7             Add-On I: Oct. 10

            Thursday 10:00 am – 12:00 noon

Zentangle® is a fun, relaxing, easy to learn method of drawing beautiful images from structured patterns. If you can write your name, you can create a Zentangle. Really! For examples of what Zentangle looks like go to  www.zentangle.com . Beginning level, limited to 20 students. Materials fee $10; pay instructor at the first class.
Instructor Sandra Westcott is a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) and has taught workshops at the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, galleries around Fairbanks, and in Anchorage as well as private workshops for educators and other professional groups. She has a teaching studio in The Annex.

Simply Socks

ART8             Session II: Oct. 16, 23, 30, Nov. 6

            Wednesdays 9:30 am – 12:00 noon

Knit socks from top to toe using double pointed needles. Along the way we’ll talk about ribbing, heel flaps, heels, gussets, feet, and toes. Your socks can be thick or thin, plain or fancy.   Students must know how to cast on, knit, and purl.   Caution: In order to work on the next sock segment in the next class, there will be homework! A basic supply list will be sent with the course confirmation. Enrollment limited to 15.

Instructor Gail Davidson is a retired geologist who recently completed a Masters degree in linguistics.   When not playing outdoors, she knits in any spare moments, something she’s been doing since dinosaurs walked the earth.

Design Your Own Quilt Patterns

ART9               Session II: Oct. 16, 23, 30, Nov. 6

            Wednesdays 1:30 – 3:00 pm

You need never buy a published pattern or rely on traditional patterns again. Your quilts will be completely original with these easy to master design techniques. Tell your friends you’re studying applied mathematics at OLLI, because you’ll be using geometry, fractals, symmetries, tessellations and mathematical patterns. Bring pencil, ruler, paper scissors, and a box of crayons or colored pencils. Materials fee $2. Enrollment limited to 20.

Instructor Stephanie Rudig was a teacher of elementary math and science to gifted students in the FNSBSD for 25 years.  She is a quilter, clothing maker, makes soft sculpture birds, print maker and dabbler in all things arty.

Paper Art

ART10             Session II: Oct. 17, 24, 31, Nov. 7

            Thursdays 1:30 – 4:30 pm

On the first day, we will learn how to make marbled and painted papers, then use those in projects for gifts or for yourself. Projects will include a sketchbook, some cards and lots of other ideas. Materials fee $15; pay instructor at the first class. Enrollment limited to 20.

Book Binding

ART11             Add-on II: Nov. 12, 13, 14, 15

            Tuesday – Friday 1:45 – 4:45 pm

Learn the history and principles of bookbinding using everyday materials and methods as practiced in bygone years. We will start by talking about paper and the other materials used in making books and then we will make a traditional hardbound book. If you are looking for a simple, decorative, artsy book, this isn’t the class for you. Towards the end of the class we’ll talk about other bookbinding methods that might be useful to you.   Be prepared to get your hands dirty – maybe even a paper cut or two. Bring two pair of scissors (one for paper and one for cloth), a ruler, pencil, a cheap paintbrush (about

an inch wide), a small jar with lid to hold paste, and cloth that you would like to use for the cover material of your book. The instructor will bring paper and other materials required and we’ll share costs.   Enrollment limited to 10.
