Activity 1: Watching them Sprout
Materials:
- 1 gallon resealable plastic bag for each student
- 1 piece of paper towel same size as bag
- water
- stapler and staples
- a variety of seeds
- hanging rack or line
- clothes pins
Procedure:
Gear Up:
- Show seeds to students and ask them what they know about
seeds or if they have any questions. List
- Ask students what they think they would need to make
the seeds grow into plants
Explore:
- Have each student get a baggie and paper towel.
- Wet the paper towels and put them inside the baggie so
they are flat
- Make a row of staples about three inches up from the
bottom of the bag all the way across the bag. This is to keep seeds from rotting
in the excess water that make accumulate at the bottom of the bag
- Put seeds (up to 5) in the bag so they are not touching.
- Carefully hang bag so that seeds stay on staple in.
- Observe every other day and record with drawings, measuerments
and words how seed is changing
Generalize:
- Ask students what they observed
- Ask how their plants changed
- Ask how all the seedlings were alike and how they were
different.
- Ask students where they think plants were getting the
food to grow
