Circle Calendar
This
overhead circle calendar, designed by White Mountain teacher Cheryl Pratt,is
a big hit with her young students and with other teachers! . Cheryl uses
this circle calendar to show the phases of the moon, student and Elder
birthdays, the Earth revolving around the Sun, and much more! She shared
this idea with us at our December 02 follow-up meeting in Anchorage, complete
with all the materials necessary for us to make calendars ourselves. Thanks
to Cheryl for this great idea and effort. Click

Why Is It So Windy in Wales?
Teachers
Sue Yates and Geraldine Ongtowasruck (OLCG '02) and their middle school
students in Wales, Alaska have gotten a great start on their inquiry project!
Besides all the work they did in the summer institute, their students
have already started collecting GLOBE Atmosphere data, Elder Pete Sereadlook
(pictured here with teacher Sue Yates and students Marissa Oxereok and
Charlene Heavner) has talked with all the students in the school, and
they are keeping an inquiry bulletin board posted for questions and research.
According to Sue, Elder Pete's visit was "...so awesone. The students
were taking notes like crazy and we all had a good time." For more
information, check out Sue's
article on the Alaska Science Consortium site.
Team Teaching and Peer Tutoring
Teachers
Betty Stroup (OLCG 2001) and Terry McCarthy, along with their 2nd and
5th graders at North Pole Elementary, Alaska are engaged in a dynamic
atmosphere study! They are learning to work together as teachers and cross-age
peers as they investigate clouds, the water cycle and GLOBE cloud protocols.
They are doing lots of hands-on investigations and working on new ways
to estimate and make sense of cloud cover percentages (which is no small
feat for the younger students). If you want to know more, contact Betty
or come to the follow-up meeting in December where she'll be sharing her
process!
