J-1 Exchange Student DS2019 Extension Procedures

Extensions during the academic year:

J-1 exchange students requesting extension of a semester program must be nominated by their home institution for extension.   The nomination must be submitted in writing from the home institution exchange coordinator to the designated exchange advisor in the UAF International Programs & Initiatives.

In addition to documentation of nomination by the home institution students must submit the following:

  * Written request for extension to include a list of proposed course(s) and dates of extension.

 * Proof of financial support as specified in the Financial Statement for International Applicants form.

 * Proof of continuing insurance coverage for the extension period.

The deadline for extension requests is one month prior to the end date on the current DS2019 form.

Extensions for summer study:

J-1 exchange students may request to extend their stay for summer study.   Enrollment in summer session course(s) must begin during the first summer session beginning in May and students must remain enrolled for the duration of the extension dates in a minimum of 6 academic credits per six-week summer session.

Course(s) must be:

   * Applicable to student’s academic program at their home institution or

   * Have U.S. cultural experience relevancy, i.e., Alaska native studies

All courses and extensions are subject to UAF academic advisor approval.   Approval will be based on academic and cultural relevance.   Recreational courses may be taken in addition to academic courses.

The length of the extension will be based on the course dates of the academic and/or cultural course(s).

Students must submit the following documentation:

   * Written request for extension to include a list of proposed course(s) and dates of extension.

   * Proof of financial support in the amount of $1,500 per month.

   * Proof of continuing insurance coverage for the extension period.

The deadline for extension requests is one month prior to the end date on your DS2019 form.

Extensions for summer employment (academic training):

Employment must begin prior to the end of the thirty day grace period for the program dates listed on the DS2019.

Employment must be applicable to the student's academic program at their home institution. All extensions are subject to UAF exchange advisor approval.

The length of the extension will be based on employment dates and the total time of employment may not exceed the duration of the study program specified for the initial on the DS2019 for the initial program.

Students must provide the following documentation:

 * Written request for extension to include a description of proposed employment and relation to academic program.

 * A letter of offer from the employer to the student including the position title, position location, position duties and exact dates of employment.

 * Proof of financial support in the amount of $1,500 per month. Prospective wages may be considered as proof of financial support.

 * Proof of continuing insurance coverage for the extension period.
